Iran and the Axis of Skiville 7pm - 10th January 2012 The Alpine Club 55/56 Charlotte Road, London, EC2A 3QF In 1996 Henry Iddon wrote to the British Embassy in Tehran to enquire about the skiing in the country, but it wasn't until 2011 that the opportunity arose to visit Iran and Mt Damavand (5671m) on a skiing mountaineering trip to the highest volcano in Asia. Damavand is the symbol of Iranian resistance against despotism and foreign rule in Persian poetry and literature. Meanwhile by 2011 Iran had been

Saturday night saw an impromptu visit to the snowsports night at Kendal Film Festival. A last minute text from Henry Iddon saying that he was lecturing about out trip to Iran in March, which I was totally unaware of, forced me to drop my knife and fork and head down to the Town Hall theatre. A great talk from Henry led into Solitaire a ski film from Nick Waggoner and Sweetgrass productions. It was a complete gem, I had no intention of going to see it originally but it was phenomenal. Nick talked about the

Jordan Buys eyeing up his flash of The End of the Affair, E8 6c © Alex Messenger Fresh from an another astounding flashascent of the End of the Affairon Friday I went with a very on form Jordan Buys to Burbage North for him to try and flash The Promise. It's been 3 years nearly since I climbed the route and putting a top rope on I'd forgotten how technically difficult it really is (and shockedmyselfthat I'd managed to punter my way up the thing). It happens so frequently these days for Jordan that I've started thinking that flashing an E7 twice a week is normal behaviour and that everyone is out there doing it! Seeing the news post on UKClimbing.com reminded me that it is definitely not and that I should put a photo up at least. I was going to blog about this a couple of weeks ago when it happened but got side-trackedwith more important things (like work!) Anyway, another very impressive effort from Jordan. The first pull certainly felt like the

If I were to say what was one of the best sporting achievements of the last 10 years was – I’d probably sayclimbing Gasherbrum II in winter. Such a brutal environment to survive and succeed in in Winter. I saw the COLD film as part of the Reel Rock Tour in Sheffield earlier in the year and it was brilliant. Really accurately portraying the suffering of extreme environments. Tonight is the North Face Speaker Series event in London where Cory Richards, Simone Moro and Denis Urubko are presenting a ...

A beautiful and savage beast K2 from my tent door, Karakoram, Pakistan © John Roberts "K2 is the most demanding climb in theHimalayas. 1 in 4 climbers who have tried to get to the top haveperished." James Naughtie, BBC Radio 4 Today Programme, 16th Nov 2011 If my mother was listening to Radio 4 this morning I'm fairly sure there'll be no way she'll ever allow me to leave for Pakistan with the objective of standing on the summit of K2. Little does she know of the rumblings that have been coming in and out

HeadpointingThe Midas Touch, Anglezarke, E7 6c © Rob Dyer/John Roberts Still hungover from a friend's stag do on Saturday I was woken up early by the ever uber-keen, Jordan Buys wanting to get out climbing. After somewranglingover location due to weather, objective, lack of driving psyche we decided to go to Anglezarke to have a go at Andy Farnell's testpiece from the 90s, The Midas Touch, E6 6c.
