Lots of Snow in the West.

Looking South along the East face of Aonach Mor today. The routes Left Twin and Morwand finish up the snowcrest catching the sunshine the in the middle distance. It started off a lovely day today. We were up on Aonach Mor and, for me a least, it was the first day up there this season with good visibility. I took this opportunity to have a good look around. For this time of year there is loads of snow about, most of which has been blown in on a Westerly wind. As you would expect there is some pretty ...

Wild Day

Looking up the Nid ridge on Aonach Mor this morning, it did not look like there was a great deal of new snow. The strong winds, and low temperatures meant the most locations exposed to the wind like in the picture were very scoured. On lee slopes however, there was plenty of fresh unstable snow, and some big new cornices, and loads of blowing snow (no pictures as all the blowing snow made for very poor visibility). A quick probe close to where I dug todays pit site and I found over 150cm of fresh snow, and

Avalanche Debris

Lots of evidence of avalanche activity during yesterdays thaw. Below is a big slide out of Easy Gully on Aonach Mor. If anyone spots any other debris, please can you fill out the form on the website. There is a cool new map you can just click, so you dont even need to work out a Grid Reference!

Motivated for Winter (again)

Image from Google Yesterday Johann and I had a lazy start up to Aonach Mor with the plan to climb Stirling Bridge, a Steve Kennedy route I've been keen to try for a long time. When we walked in the weather was crap but slowly it cleared while I was climbing and it turned out to be a stunning day. As it turned out the conditions for getting gear wasn't perfect and I never judged the kit I would need very well so we lowered off a few battered wires, next time though. I was expecting to be pissed of but wasn't at all, was ...

Some pictures from Aonach Mor today. Looking south to Aonach Beag. A boarder enjoying Summit Gully A busy day at the top of Easy Gully

Cwm Cneifion today by Darren Hollins

Image from Google Hi Andy, Photos as promised from today's trip up "Nameless Gully" Cwm Cneifion. Conditions up in the high Cwm were reasonable given the extensive thaw - But it has really taken it's toll on Devil's Kitchen - With no ice left on the key routes! There were a couple of climbers on "Cneifion Arête" but that was a rock climb today....2 others on "Tower Slabs" Which was in surprising condition, with a fair amount of solid ice on it! I opted for "The Nameless Gully" between the slabs & Easy Gully, as the top out

The end.

With almost unbroken sunshine and some very warm temperatures (it was +11 degrees on the summit at one point), it really felt like winter was over today. It feels like it has been a particularly long winter this year. There is still a good covering of snow at higher levels, with plenty of large cornices waiting to fall down, and on Ben Nevis especially the continuing risk of ice fall. The top of Easy Gully, notice all the marks in the snow from collapsing sections of cornice. Looking into Coire an Lochan,

Aonach Mor on Tuesday.

Still some large cornices on the top of Coire an Lochan. An avalanche that released (probably sometime yesterday) due to a large section collapsed cornice. Debris made it down to the Loch. Lots of people heading down Easy Gully (or at least thinking about it). Coire an Lochan probably had it's busiest day of the winter today.

Another sunny day.

It was another beautiful sunny day today. Here are some pictures The crags in Coire an Lochan a buried in soft snow. There have been few climbers on Aonach Mor (Ben Nevis has been popular from a climbing point of view thought). The ski tracks that can be seen come from Easy Gully. The corniced entrance to the gully looks a little exciting at the moment. Avalanches have occurred on South facing slopes during the past few days due to solar warming. Some very good skiing in the Back Coires. Here Matt cruises

North Gully, SCNL

Today Grant and I headed up into Stob Coire nan Lochain for a little bit of sun bathing. Only joking, we looked at mountaineering skills that would be needed for moving up and down easy snow gullies. We looked at bucket seats, buried axe's, T-axes, bollards, stompers, slings and spikes, simple rope work and knots (it does get easier Grant!). We went up North Gully (I) which had monster cornices hanging over above us, we then walked up to the summit and descended Easy Gully (I). Teams out on SC, NC, ...
