Currents Welcomes First Descents To Canada

Image from Google First Descents is a wonderful program that offers young adults, age 18-39, who are fighting or have survived, cancer, a week-long outdoor adventure experience, primarily around, but not limited to, whitewater kayaking. The program is free, and it has helped hundreds of young men and women to learn to deal with the illness and show that they are stronger than it is. Recently, First Descents went to Canada for the first time, and Five2Nine Productions was there to capture the experience for the latest ...

First Ascent Helps Kayakers Make First Descents

Image from Google Over the past year, First Ascent has earned itself a great reputation for outstanding gear both designed and used by mountain guides. But the company is outfitting adventurers of all types, including kayakers Jesse Coombs, Darin McQuoid and Ben Stookesberry who have been making first descents on rivers around the world. Their paddling adventures have been captured in a new film entitled Hotel Charlie No. 5 , which you can take a sneak peek at below. Looks great!

Unknown: Endless Ascent Math

Unknown. I love that word. The pursuit of the "unknown" keeps me interested in life, getting out of bed in the morning, and motivated to sleep fast so I can get back at it in the morning. First ascents of climbs, first descents of rivers, attempts to do things differently (climb icebergs, fly over a big ditch on my paraglider), it's all about getting off the square of my mind that is "known" and setting a course for the place where things get weird. Which brings me to the endless ascent . The goal is to

Antarctica 2009: Business As Usual Down South

It's been a rather by-the-book week in the Antarctic, with the teams all continuing to make progress, but without any major issues. The Kaspersky Commonwealth Team hit another milestone by pulling within sight of the Thiel Mountains, but not before they came across a couple of large Nunataks, which are rocky outcroppings that stick-up through the ice. By all accounts, the weather has been cooperating nicely, and spirits remain high, making the journey a good one, despite the day-to-day rigors of skiing for

Kayaking Through Bhutan, Part 2

Last week I posted Part 1 of a video series that followed kayakers Ben Stookesberry and Chris Korbulic. The second part of the video is posted below, and it continues the amazing journey on Day 3 of the expedition, with more beautiful shots of the river and the rocky gorges that it runs through. When I wrote about this last week, I mentioned that the team was making a first descent through a river in Bhutan, but in both videos, they have yet to actually reach that country, which is their ultimate goal. ...

The Kamchatka Project To Explore The Wilds of Russia

Next summer, seven kayakers will be setting out to explore one of the most remote and untouched regions of the world when they begin a paddling expedition of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, located in the far east of that country. There aim is to raise public awareness of the region, which they call one of the last truly wild places on the planet. The expedition is called the Kamchatka Project and it will focus on making the first descents of at least three rivers on the peninsula, which remains mostly ...

Last Descent of the Yangtze

I often write about paddlers making first descents on some remote river somewhere, but rarely do you have the opportunity to write about a last descent. That's exactly what is going to happen on the Yangtze River in China this year, as the great dam project there is finally complete. For years, scientists and environmentalists have warned that the landscapes there will be changed forever thanks to this series of dams, and it's going to change the course of the river, both literally and figuratively. Check

Jonaven Moore

Image from Google It would be hard to lock down classification on Jonaven. From winning both junior halfpipe and boarder-X events at the 93 Westbeach classic when he was 14, to tagging first descents in Alaska, Jonaven prides himself on being able to ride anything on a snowboard. Jonaven grew up in Banff, AB and was exposed to the backcountry at an early age by mountaineering parents. Balancing his time in big mtn. terrain with competitive freestyle interests Jonaven got his jump on a carreer in professional snowboarding
