Breakage at Ice Caves

Image from Google One of the key holds for many of the climbs on the roof of the Beef Cave in the Ice Caves at the Sad Boulders has broken. The break, which happened at the end of November, was of the good finger-hold that was at the right end of the rail that Beautiful Gecko follows, a hold that also was important for lines Aquatic Hitchhiker , Feels Like a Barnacle , In the Aquarium and Windchill . While all these lines will be harder now, this break will probably have the most impact on Beautiful Gecko . Anyone who has

Lonnie Dupre Set To Attempt Solo Climb Of Denali In January

Polar explorer and climber Lonnie Dupre has set off for Alaska, where he hope to make a solo climb of Denali in January. If successful, it'll be the first solo ascent of the mountain during it's coldest and darkest month ever. Standing 20,320 ft (6193 meters) in height, Denali is the tallest mountain in North America. Generally it is climbed in June and July each year, but there are occasional attempts during other months of the year, including the winter. Over the years there have been nine successful ...

Everest Base Camp Trek: In BC!

Image from Google I posted another story of my trek to Everest Base Camp over at Gadling today. This one offers some thoughts on the final leg of the trek from Gorakshep up to BC itself . That rock doesn't make that last hike very easy, and your already tired legs will feel the burn all the way up to Base Camp itself. Walking in the Khumbu Valley is quite an interesting experience. You wander on and off the glacier, ...

The Ice Caves of Patagonia

Image from Google Patagonia remains one of the most enduring adventure destinations on the planet. Its very name sparks images of sharply peaked mountains, snow covered passes, and incredibly serene lakes. Earlier today, I came across the video below while reading the Adventure Chronicles . It not only captures some amazing general footage from the region, it also takes us on a tour of some spectacular ice caves that form in the glaciers there. The accompanying music is wonderful as well, so I recommend sitting back, turing

Jeff Sillcox, Aquatic Hitchhiker

A lot of people had eyed this project, or even tried this project, but Jeff Sillcox actually managed to hitch a ride on this project, listed in the Bishop Bouldering guide on page 170. At the Sad Boulders, Aquatic Hitchhiker follows the same line as Feels Like a Barnacle (which is sadly mis-described in the guide -- not my fault I swear! Come on ... no way did I write that ...), but while Feels Like a Barnacle climbs out along the keel of the Ice Cave roof using feet on the back wall as needed to reach the
