Are Ice Tool Leashes As Archaic as Gaiters, Screamers and Third Tools? The picture above is the last one I could find in my photo collection where I have a leash on a tool--Norway 2005. This is another blog post inspired by a question from a reader. The question was roughly, "I was wondering your take on leashless climbing for beginners? I am a sorta old school ice climber that still uses leashes for those 4 days a year I manage to get out ice climbing. (father in washington state) I feel that I don't get

Rhythm of the Seasons – Part One

As the Sam Adams commercials claim, there is a rhythm of the seasons.  This is especially true when it comes to ice climbing. Where does the rhythm begin, however, and where does it end?  Does a lack of climbable ice in the immediate ar...

Video: Fun In Chamonix

Image from Google How's this for a fun – not to mention busy– day. The video below was shot in Chamonix, France, which is considered one of the truly great outdoor playgrounds in Europe, if not the world. In the video, climber Colin Haley manages to not only hit the slopes for some skiing, but also some ice climbing, and later in the day bouldering. Yep, that's right, everything you see Colin doing in the video was all done on the same day. Maybe it'll give you some inspiration on what to do this weekend! Enjoy! Colin

Winter Is Coming...

Image from Google Here at the Ice Factor we're all starting to get psyched for the winter season again - it certainly doesn't feel like summer up here any more, with a bite in the air already and the hills starting to take on the purples and browns of Autumn. With that in mind, here's something you can enjoy with us to get you stoked too... STS Dry Tooling Competition We'll be hosting the first round of this annual competition this year. It isn't just an elite competition (although the 'great and the good' do often join ...

Something to train for.

Image from Google I've always needed goals, aims in life, little targets - all very un-zen I know. But I struggle for motivation and get a bit lost without something driving me on. Luckily I've two interesting possibilities on the horizon. The first hopefully a return to Chamonix and the Alps, and a chance to hook up with Jon Bracey, who I climbed the Grand Couloir on the Plan with in the Spring. The ticklist as ever is enormous, it would be great to make it one or two routes shorter. The other trip is a maybe for January -

Chere Couloir, Aiguille du Toule and Cosmiques Arete

Image from Google A few more pics from the week with John Long and Matt Coleman. We had some very snowy weather which led to a very eclectic week of rock climbing in Italy, ice climbing in an underground ice cave near annecy, the Aiguille de Toule, an attempt on the Rochefort, the Chere couloir (in amazing conditions) [...]

Climbing, Climbing and more Climbing

Image from Google Forest Wagner called in on behalf of the 12 Day Mountaineering Course. He said that they are "sitting in the sun on the glacier and having a great time." Yesterday they climbed a rock butter on the south ridge of Peak Bagger. Today they had a class about avalanches; avalanche terrain, route finding and recognizing clues to instability. Tomorrow they plan on climbing Peak 8,404. Saturday they will be ice climbing and then moving camp back to the Landing Zone to fly out, if weather allows, on Sunday morning.

12 Day Mountaineering Course Having Fun!

Image from Google Guide Winslow Passey phoned in from the Pika Glacier this afternoon. They group is doing great. They have covered a lot of stuff and did some multi-pitched rock climbing as well as ice climbing and along with some touring of the area. They attempted to climb a peak last night in honor of the Solstice but got weathered out. They have had some rain :( Despite this are learning lots. They are scheduled to fly out tomorrow mid-day...weather dependent. blogger laura

By Hege Nordeide, provided by Marten Blixt, AlpinKlatring, Norway Outer Sognefjord and Hoyanger provide a spectacular destination for ice climbing (Sognefjord is the largest fjord in Norway).
