Alan Arnette Summits Kilimanjaro

Image from Google Climber Alan Arnette knocked off another one of the Seven Summits today, reaching the "Roof of Africa" on Kilimanjaro. This is his fifth successful summit as he continues his efforts to raise funds, and awareness , of Alzheimer's Disease . Earlier today Alan sent an audio dispatch from the top of Kili, where he reported spectacular views and clear skies overlooking the African savannah below. Since Kilimanjaro is the tallest free standing mountain in the world, at 5894 meters (19,340 feet), summiteers can

The Eight Parallel Examines Women's Adventure Sports In Indonesia

Image from Google The Eighth Parallel is a fantastic short film created by Darcy Turenne, who traveled to Bali and Java in Indonesia to interview a group of young women who are pursuing their passion for adventure sports. Amongst them are rock climbers, mountain bikers, surfers, and more, with each of them expressing what drew them to their particular sport and the obstacles they had to overcome to pursue these activities in a culture that doesn't see many women in that light. The Adventure Journal has an interview with ...

Dreamlike Wave is Stunning the Surfing World

As discoveries of secret surf spots go, the incredible find by Rip Curl team members during a recent Search expedition in the jungles of Indonesia may be unrivaled. What makes this latest wave discovery so fascinating is that it was made not on a coastline or island shore, but on a remote jungle river that gets [...]

Nat Geo Channel's Expedition Week Begins Sunday

Image from Google Expedition Week returns to the National Geographic Channel starting this weekend, with a fantastic line-up of shows, including two new premiere's each night. The fun begins on Sunday, April 3rd, with the debut of Eating with Cannibals and Finding Jack The Ripper , which promises to present new clues as to the identity of that infamous killer. Things are just getting started from there though, as some of the most interesting programming is scheduled for later in the week. For instance, I'm excited about the

Nat Geo Looking To Fund Young Explorer As Part Of Expedition Week

Image from Google The week of April 3rd - 9th will be Expedition Week on the Nat Geo Channel , and much like they did back in the fall of 2009 , the network is running an online contest that will determine one of two expeditions that they will fund in the near future. The contest is called Expedition Granted , and it pits Dash Masland vs. Trevor Frost for the ultimate goal of sending them on the project they've been planning for some time. In the case of Dash, that would be off to Hawaii, where she'll do research to help

The Green Way Up: From Australia to Norway on Biodiesel

Here's a cool project that was sent my way a few days back. It seems a group of Aussie boys have come up with the idea of driving from Hobart, Australia to Norway using nothing but biodiesel. Now that, in and of itself, sounds like a fun road trip adventure, but not necessarily all that out of the ordinary. But the four travelers don't plan on stopping at a single petrol station along the way. Dubbed "The Green Way Up," the plan is to get underway in March from the southernmost tip of Australia and the ...

National Geographic Announces Photo Contest Winners

Image from Google Each year, National Geographic holds a photography contest that spotlights some of the best images taken over the previous 12 months. The images are usually quite spectacular and worthy of the Nat Geo legacy, not to mention having the ability to make other aspiring photographers, like myself, quite envious. The 2010 award winners have been announced, and as usual, the photos are fantastic. You can check them all out on the contest page, which can be found by clicking here . There are three galleries to ...

Outside Examines The Tragic Death of Andy Irons

I don't do a lot of coverage of the surf scene here on the Adventure Blog, but even I was well aware of talented surfer Andy Irons and was surprised by his untimely death a few weeks back, something that shocked the surfing community and left many wondering what happened. Outside Magazine has put together a great article about three-time world surfing champ and the demons he battled over the course of his career in the form of drug and alcohol abuse. Brad Melekian, the author of the article, spoke to many

Alan Arnette Announces 7 Summits Climb For Alzheimer's!

Image from Google Today is a big day for our friend Alan Arnette , who has announced that he'll be climbing the 7 summits to raise awareness and funds for the Cure Alzheimer's Fund . Alan has dubbed his adventure the 7 Summits Climbs For Alzheimers: Memories Are Everything expedition, and has set an ambitious agenda for himself, as he hopes to complete all of the climbs in just one year. The expedition gets underway in just a few weeks time when Alan will jet off to Antarctica where he'll face the first of his seven climbs
