How Coire an Sneachda looked today

Aladdins Couloir is incomplete, the trident gully area looked a little more hopeful A very bare Mess of Potage, Jacobs Ladder is incomplete. Some ice holding out on the flat ice area with usable snowfields between point five and Fiachaill Buttress

Soft weak layer

As the winds increased on Monday a firm slabby layer developed overlying the soft layer beneath leading to a snow pack weaknesses. In this photo you can see the mixture of blue snow ice and windslab deposits. (Mess of Potage and Jacobs Ladder) A tap test revealing the weaker soft layer.

Perfect Choice

Today I was kick starting my next winter stint with a trip over to the Cairngorms with Kenny. We met up with Andy, Kennys client, aswell for a very socialable day. It was discusting weather leaving Fort William at 6am but as we got further East it was clearing up nicely. On arrival to the crag it was blue skies and a cold wind. We firstly climbed The Message (IV,6), topped out at 1pm, nipped back down and then climbed the Direct Start (IV,5) to Hidden Chimney (III). Many other teams out today on routes ...

Very cold with bright spells

Some avalanche debris was noted just below Jacobs ladder on the right of this photo and below mess of potage below the crag apron. The snowpack very cold and weak on many aspects. Tap test revealed a weak faceted layer just above the old hard snow ice layer on a NW aspect at 1050m.

Spring snow

Today was very pleasant compared to yesterday's conditions of winds gusting up to 113mph. It is still mild but this is what is left after the major thaw on Thursday. Mess of Potage people on "Honey pot" and various other routes. There's a huge cornice to the left of the crag and over Jacobs ladder. Avalanche debris which happened during the major part of the thaw and came from the steep ground above. Aladdin's Buttress with Patey's route looking interesting. Aladdin's mirror on the right short and sweet.

Avalanche day

Six separate avalanches were noted today on Westerly and North-West aspects. One was triggered on the Chais Headwall . There has been a lot of drifting and new windslab is overlying the soft snow from yesterday. This is making the snowpack very unstable and the picture below demonstrates the windslab failing on isolation on the soft snow beneath . Drifting on across the Chais ridge on a strong Easterly wind. Recent avalanche debris below Jacobs Ladder...not triggered by the skier who has just made a ...

Glorious Cairngorms

Image from Google Hi Alan, Saw the "Glorious Ben Nevis" and thought you may like some from Sneachda also from Sunday. We did the Fiacaill Couloir, which turned out to be a bit scrappy on the first 2 pitches, then much better at the top. From what we could see, Jacobs Ladder, Aladdins Couloir and Central Gully were still complete. Check out the photos at Tims Blog Cheers, Tim. Thanks Tim
