Explorers Club Follow-Up: Clarification On Yesterday's Story

Yesterday I posted another story in the ongoing saga of the internal disputes that are taking place inside the Explorers Club , the 108 year old institution that has been at the forefront of exploration and adventure since its founding. In the story I quoted a New York Post article which stated that EC member Josh Bernstein , who also happens to be on the Club's Board of Directors, was "censured and fined" because he accepted tickets to the Club's annual Patron's Dinner from the event's sponsor, Rolex .

Explorers Club Infighting Hits New York Post

Image from Google One of the stories I've been following over the past few weeks has been reports of serious infighting going on at the Explorers Club , an organization that has been around for more than a hundred years and has counted such notable explorers as Neil Armstrong and Sir Edmund Hillary amongst its ranks. Today, a story appeared in the New York Post that gives us a further glimpse at what is going on behind closed doors at the venerable institution. You can read the Post article by clicking here , but in a ...

Mountaineering Courses Update - Hoeschen & Wagner

Image from Google The 6 Day Mountaineering Course with instructors Josh Hosechen and Matt Montsvon has returned to Talkeetna from the Matanuska Glacier. They were unable to fly into the Alaska Range at the start of their course so they chose to drive to the Matanuska Glacier in the Chugach Mountains for glacier camping, course work, crampon travel and technical skills. They returned this afternoon ready to hit the showers! They all had a great time and learned alot with Josh and Matt, 2 super leaders and teachers. We look

6-Day Mountaineering/Hoeschen

Image from Google Josh called in with an update from the Matanuska Glacier. The weather has been good down there, students are stoked and having a good time. They are going to go ice climbing today. CBC

Matanuska Bound

Image from Google Josh Hoeschen Matt Montavon and their 6-day Mountaineering Course team are headed for the Matanuska Glacier. They will get some great Ice time! They had great courses here in town with fixed line ascension, cooking classes and lots more. Ready to jump in the van! Otis, Jason, Hazel, Matt, Josh, David, Tyler, looking rather serious between laughs. Today they are "moving camp" and packed accordingly, with each person's pack loaded with their personal gear and some group gear rather than in duffels as we do

Lots of updates

Image from Google Hugh Gaasch of the 12 day Mountaineering course called in from their new camp down glacier in Little switzerland. They are all having a good time and learning a ton. Winslow, Hugh and Ben and the the whole class are probably within striking distance of some of the best granite rock climbing in the Alaska Range. Hugh had seen the plane drop off the Wounded Warriors at the landing strip on the Pika Glacier. Their team will spend the day tomorrow doing lots of classes to get ready for a bunch of camp moving

Josh and Russell's crews checking in.

Image from Google Photo of a group on the headwall. The lowest climber on the ropes is just about to cross the bergschrund. Some seasons this bergschrund is much more difficult than shown in the picture. The 3rd climber from the top is hunched over clipping his or her rope through a piece of fixed protection. The top climber looks like they are almost at the top of the fixed lines, but I bet he/she is only half way there. If you look closely you can see another set of fixed lins just to the left of this team, those lines

Updates from Denali

Image from Google Josh Hoeschen's 6/6 WB team phoned in this morning from 14K. They are resting today and will carry to the top of the fixed line at 16,200 tomorrow. Josh reports that the team is strong and doing great, and that they're all getting along well. A crowded 14K camp from July '10. Hopefully Josh's team has as good views! Russell Hunter's 5/30 WB team also called this morning from 17K where they arrived last night. They are also resting today and doing well with good weather. They're hoping for more good weather

A Visit To Joshua Tree

Image from Google Last week I mentioned that it was the start of National Parks Week here in the U.S., which is an annual celebration of all the fantastic wilderness areas that have been set aside for public use by the government. Places like Yosemite and Yellowstone and dozens more. During this week, which runs until next Sunday, April 25th, all of the parks in the U.S. system have waived their entry fee, allowing visitors to explore them for free.Over the weekend, I was fortunate enough to be invited to Joshua Tree to ...
