Antarctica 2011: Racing The Clock And History

Image from Google It has been another eventful and busy week in the Antarctic, where teams continue to struggle with weather and difficult surface conditions. We're now far enough along into the season that the South Pole skiers are recognizing that time is at a premium, and while some will have to face harsh realities about achieving their goals, others are now racing the clock, and history, as they struggle to reach the finish line on schedule. One of the teams that is painfully aware of their position and how the clock

Trekking The Great Himalaya Trail

Image from Google In terms of long distance trekking, the relatively newly established Great Himalayan Trail is tough to beat in terms of challenge and beauty. The GHT is made up of a collection of existing treks that have been linked together to make one massive hiking experience, and once it is completed, trail organizers hope that it will span Bhutan, Tibet, India, Nepal and Pakistan. For now however, the one section of the GHT that is officially open and accessible is the leg that runs across Nepal. That trail was ...

Combat Wounded Vets at 11,000 feet

Image from Google Just got off the Sat phone with Tim Hewette , one of the AMS guides on the Combat Wounded Vets expedition. He said they are all healthy and doing well. He added that Justin is "working his tail off" and doing great. They had challenging glacier traveling conditions on the lower glacier but are in good spirits and are moving at a respectable pace. Their progression of camps since leaving Kahiltna Glacier Base camp (7200') has been 7,500', 7,800', 9,000', and now 11,000 feet. I told them they had many fans

Wounded Warrior Denali Expedition Prep

Image from Google Gerard, and tales of airplanes driving into crevasses in Antarctica. Hearsay? Maybe. Colby with Tyler, Vic, and Justin, enjoying the sunshine. Captain Dave Olson and Evan, preparing their stomachs for a long day. "You know, I could have been doing anything else for three weeks - golfing, sailing..." Dave muses. "Massages!" guide Alex adds. I wonder what 17-year-old Evan added to that list. But instead father and son are going to Denali. Not a bad option in my book. AMS Headquarters has been busy the last

The Green Way Up: From Australia to Norway on Biodiesel

Here's a cool project that was sent my way a few days back. It seems a group of Aussie boys have come up with the idea of driving from Hobart, Australia to Norway using nothing but biodiesel. Now that, in and of itself, sounds like a fun road trip adventure, but not necessarily all that out of the ordinary. But the four travelers don't plan on stopping at a single petrol station along the way. Dubbed "The Green Way Up," the plan is to get underway in March from the southernmost tip of Australia and the ...

Knolan, Joe , Greg , Dan , Roland, Justin and Hans practice their crevasse jumping skills before they head to the airport.

High camp

Image from Google I talked to Nate Opp briefly earlier today. They are doing well. Nate is a man of few words. Mike Janes and the rest of his crew headed up to High Camp this morning. I talked to him a bit this evening. They arrived and were able to move into some half built walls up there. They were just beefing them up now and melting some snow for water. They are planning on taking a rest day tomorrow. Sounded like a really nice day up there. Nate's, Rodrigo's and Todd's teams are all at 14K now. Peter Anderson, Nick ...
