Pretty wet and mild up in Scotland today, freezing level was above the summits and the rain just kept on coming! Katy and I opted for a nice ridge where we could keep moving without any difficulties but kept some interest. I had wanted to do the East ridge of Beinn a' Chorainn after Al had mentioned it to me a while back. Good fun for a foul day like today. The snow pack was saturated all the way through to the ground, there were some signs of old ice around but everything was pretty mushy. A few small ...

Today Katy and I headed into Glencoe armed with sunglasses an axe and crampons and hit Curved Ridge (III). I had thought (or hoped) that it had an ascent yesterday and put a nice tracks in, unfortunately there wasn't, so today required alot of digging. Fortunately I remembered where most of the spikes were and some of the cracks. Katy was keen for leading too, so she got on the sharp end a couple of times which was great. Saved me doing all the digging! We didn't see anyone else on the route but saw some

In a previous post, I discussed my feelings about the transformation of climbing into a luxury sport, at least at a certain end of the socio-economic spectrum. I posted a Youtube Video of an ad made by Citibank that features Katie Brown and Alex Honnold. Here's the video: Given the dismal economic picture in the US right now and the fact that big American banks in particular have had a great deal to do with it, it was natural that the ad would spark a certain degree of controversy. A forum post on Mountain

The editors letter in the most recent issue of Alpinist Magazine (#35) raises some questions about anonymous ascents and the current age of self-promotion. The following post is from an email discussion that Katie and I had prior to her letter. People like us mourning the apparent death of idealism naturally focus on [...]

Well, I can still barely lift my arms above my head any more. I got back early enough this evening to go for El Cap team training on the Crouchan, Llion and Katie led Phantom Rib, and I went up Nea with John Bunney, who had broken his Dream of White Horses cherry at the [...]

I've been between residences since about March 1st, mostly on the road for work, so mostly no big deal. Now that I'm closer to the Puget Sound region for awhile, I was incredibly lucky to land a spot in a kick ass house with a kick ass climber girl and a kick ass dog here in Seattle. I've been nesting like a madwoman the last few days, even passing on climbing invitations this weekend so that I could abuse myself by assembling scandinavian furniture and contemplating the long term mood effects of choosing

For the past few months we've been following Katie Spotz as she rowed across the Atlantic Ocean in an effort to raise funds for the the Blue Planet Run Foundation . After more than 70 days out on the water, Katie reached her destination on Sunday, setting several records in the process. Katie began her epic adventure way back at the beginning of the year when she got underway from Dakar, Senegal, on the west coast of Africa. On Sunday, she arrived in Georgetown, Guiana, having covered some 2817 miles in

Ever wonder how the ocean rowers, such as Roz Savage or Sarah Outen , manage to cross vast bodies of water, spending weeks at a time at sea, alone, and completely self sufficient? Then Popular Mechanics has just the article for you. The story takes an in depth look at exactly what kind of gear and equipment you need to successfully cross an ocean under your own power. Popular Mechanics actually takes a specific case study by checking in with Katie Spotz , who is currently rowing across the Atlantic Ocean,

I haven't posted an update on Katie Spotz since she set out on her trans-Atlantic row, but I can assure you that she is making good progress. According to an update that came across her Twitter feed yesterday, she has now rowed more than 1287 miles, leaving her with "just" 1270 more to go. You may recall that Katie set out from Senegal, along the West Coast of Africa, back on January 3rd with the intent of arriving in Guyana, South America. Initial estimates suggested that it would take the 22-year old ...

WideWorld Magazine has posted a brief follow-up on Katie Walter , the 17 year old British Girl who has part of the Shackleton's Unfinished Journey Team that we followed over the past few weeks as they made their way to the South Pole. Upon finishing that expedition, Katie earned herself a spot in the record books, becoming the youngest person to ever ski to 90ºS. The expedition kicked began at 88’23”ºS, the furthest south that famous explorer Ernest Shackleton traveled on his famous expedition back
