Today Katy had come over to visit and it was her first day out this winter after working no stop over in the North East. With a great forecast we had lots of options but we agreed that we wouldn't do anything too big and get too tired so we had a leisurely stroll up to the CIC hut, then onto the SW ridge of the Douglas Boulder (III). Today we saw Ken and his mate on Fat Boy Slim , John and his mate skied up ledge route and down something else, two guys headed to the base of number 4 and then headed back

I have just returned to Wales after spending 5 days doing my MIC Training with Plas y Brenin. We had quite a changeable week of weather. The first 3 days were good but then we had an uber thaw. We climbed Ledge Route (II), Cutlass (VI,7) and Original Route (IV,5) on Summit Buttress. We went up to Anoach Mor and up and down Zig Zags on Gearr Aonach.

Photos courtesy of Zac Poulton, James Morrison and Mark Scales Scottish winter kit So having just returned from my first Scottish winter, I thought now would be a good time to share the experience. It’s hard to know where to start, as packing my bags for the trip seems a lifetime ago. I guess a good place is in fact the packing. So having seen the kit list from AP, and confident I had most of the kit; I set about the challenge of packing all the kit into two bags. This went strangely to plan, and left me

Today was Emma's first winter climb. Infact it was her first winter day out in the mountains. I choose Ledge Route (II) on Ben Nevis as it is a really quality day out and never to difficult and exposed. The weather was perfect today, hardly any wind, no cloud and wall to wall blue skies. We went onto the summit as Emma had never been up there in winter. To say she was impressed would be an understatement! We saw teams on Tower Ridge, Gargoyle Wall and a team climbed up number 4 gully.

I headed up to Scotland yesterday for 3 days scrambling work. Today I went up Ledge Route on Ben Nevis with father and son combo Chris and Peter. They had never been on technical ground but have had their fair share of mountain walking. Unfortunately I had injured my knee a week ago running, I thought it had healed, it hadn't! So as we topped out on the route it was apparent I wasn't going to be able to do the next two days. Anyway I pushed on to the summit with the guys where it was very busy. I hobbled

Last night I called up Ben and persuaded him to come to the West and get a route in on Ben Nevis. Lots of snow had fallen, we were thinking of spending many hours wading through North-East Buttress but on the way in decided it looked like hard work. We went up and climbed Cutlass (VI,7) on the Douglas Boulder instead. Ben went up the first pitch and I took the next two pitches which both had very good climbing on. Ben then ran out 30m of rope and we just abbed into Douglas Gap West Gully and headed off the

Thanks to Nigel Hooker for this photo taken on Ledge Route today. Conditions on Nevis are pretty good and Orion Face is being climbed, along with plenty of others.

Another very good day on a very quiet Ben Nevis. Hardly anyone climbing and certainly no teams on any technical routes or the 'Classics'. Very clear and dry air with views in all directions. Ledge Route is in good shape. Routes such as Vanishing Gully and Italian Climb do have some build-up, but I'm not too sure of the quality of the ice. One area that does look promising and not too long a walk in is the ice apron area below Carn Dearg Butterss. Plenty of good ice from grade III/IV and beyond. The belays

Thanks to Patrick Scanlon for this photo taken on his i-Phone camera on the summit plateau of Nevis today. The snow on Ben Nevis is well down. A fair sized cornice is lurking at the top of No 5 Gully. Point Five detail. I doubt if the material is very well bonded. A few teams were out valiantly ploughing deep furrows. One on Tower Ridge, another going towards No 2 Gully and plenty of tracks on Ledge Route.
