Denali In January: Heading Home!

Image from Google For the past several weeks, we've all been following Lonnie Dupre has he attempted his solo climb of Denali in January. We all knew that the polar explorer was tough and could handle frigid conditions, but the task ahead of him was still a daunting one. He hoped to nab the first solo summit of the mountain during its coldest and darkest month. Today came news that the mountain had won, as he is now headed to Base Camp and eventual flight home. Throughout the month of January, things seemed to be going well

A Frigid Summit on Vinson

We reached the top of Mount Vinson yesterday under clear, but cold, skies. We had temperatures in the realm of -30 C, and 30 MPH winds - definitely cold! But, the team did great, and we unfurled the 1966 flag...

Karakorum Update: Gerlinde In K2 BC, Progress On Broad Peak

Image from Google While the U.S. enjoyed a long holiday weekend in celebration of Independence Day, the teams in the Karakorum continued to work towards their ultimate goals, namely to climb some of the highest, most challenging peaks on the planet. The latest update from Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner has her safely into Base Camp on K2 yesterday. It has been a whirlwind affair for her and her team, as they barely spent a day in Islamabad before setting out on the 500+ mile road trip to Skardu, where they would begin the long trek

Everest 2010: More Climbers Summit In Bitter Cold Weather

Image from Google Following the snowstorm that hit the mountain on Sunday, a number of teams were hunkered in on the South Col of Everest, waiting for an opportunity to go up to the summit. Thankfully for them, the weather cleared yesterday, allowing for another round of bids that resulted in more climbers from both the North and South Side of the mountain standing on top. It wasn't easy however, as when the skies cleared, the cold the weather moved in, making it a very chilly ascent. Reports have the temperatures sitting

Germans Triumph on Sarmiento's North Face

After three failed attempts in March, German climbers Robert Jasper, Joern Heller and Ralf Gantzhorn completed a rare ascent of Monte Sarmiento's west summit (2145m) on April 2. The Germans made the first ascent of the north face in 39 hours round trip, establishing La Odisea de Magellanes (WI4+) in alpine style. The route involves a 3000-meter elevation gain over the course of 20 kilometers. Well over 100 miles from the nearest settlement, the remote peak towers over the Magdalena Channel in Chilean ...

North Pole 2010: Dan and Amelia Hit 87º

It has only been a few days since I posted an update from the Arctic with news on the progress of the teams making their way to the Geographic North Pole, but it continues to be both business as usual for the explorers and quite eventful at the same time. Amelia Russell and Dan Darley crossed another milestone today, crossing the 87ºN mark, although it didn't come without a lot of work. The pair stumbled into some very challenging rubble early on, and watched in amazement as the ice once again moved ...

North Pole 2010: Tracks In The Snow and A New Expedition Begins!

Image from Google The weekend brought plenty of challenges for the polar explorers who are struggling to make headway with a brutal negative drift working against them and conditions on the ice remaining very difficult. And as those already out on the ice continue to make their way north, a new expedition is set to begin tomorrow. Just when we thought that all of the arctic teams had set out on their journeys, a new solo expedition prepares to hit the ice tomorrow. British adventurer Ben Saunders is packed and ready to go,

Kite Boarders Jump Pier Amidst 40 MPH Winds!

I first saw this story yesterday over at The Outpost , the official blog for Outdoorzy , but it took the Wend Blog to track down the video to really sell the story. In the video below you'll find some amazing, and amazingly insane, footage of two kite boarders catching BIG air, as they jump a pier in the U.K. Wend identifies the two crazy boarders as "three time British Champion Lewis Crathern and Big Air Master Jake Scrace". The duo had been planning the jump for three years, but had to wait for the ...
