Walking Home From Mongolia: A Month In!

Image from Google Way back in August, I told you about the Walking Home From Mongolia expedition , which would put adventurers Rob Lilwall and Leon McCarron on a 5000km (3106 mile) journey from Mongolia to Hong Kong, in the dead of winter no less. The plan was to travel both on foot and by kayak, and the entire trip was expected to take roughly six months. The boys hit the trail exactly one month ago today, and have been making excellent progress since. Their journey began in the village of Sainshand back on November 14th,

Return of the Yak: A Mongol Rally Documentary

I've written about the Mongol Rally numerous times on this blog. It's the annual road rally that begins in London, and various other European cities, and covers 10,000+ miles, before ending in Ulaanbaatar, the capitol of Mongolia. Along the way, the teams cross vast deserts, snowcapped mountain ranges, and miles of lonely road. One of the teams involved in the 2011 edition of the race blogged their experience at ReturnOfTheYak.com , and is now in the process of making a documentary of their travels. You'll

CheapTents Interview: Adventurer Leon McCarron

Image from Google The gang over at CheapTents.com have posted another one of their excellent interviews today, this time with adventurer Leon McCarron . If that name sounds familiar to you, it may be because he is one of the two men who are planning to walk from Mongolia to Hong Kong , a journey of 3500km (2175 miles) that will commence in November. In the interview Leon discusses a previous cycling adventure, during which he rode more than 22,500km (14,000 miles) from New York to Hong Kong, passing through a number of ...

The 2011 Mongol Rally Had Started!

Image from Google One of my favorite annual events, the Mongol Rally , has gotten underway this week, with 311 teams setting out on the ultimate road trip adventure. They'll now drive more than 10,000 miles across Europe and Asia, in vehicles more suited for commuting around town, before hitting the finish line inUlaanbaatar, Mongolia. Of the 311 teams, 224 started on Saturday in the U.K., while another 87 set off from the Czech Republic. They'll now tackle grueling deserts, snow capped mountains, and roads that can barely

Ronald Naar Passes on Cho Oyu

Renowned Netherlands mountaineer and expedition leader Ronald Naar died yesterday, May 22, of unexplained causes at 8,000 feet while climbing Cho Oyu (8201m). Naar, 56, was a mountaineering icon in the predominately sea-level plains of Netherlands - a place where alpinism is usually an international pursuit. When Naar began climbing in 1968, he quickly established himself as a national figure with notable ascents of the seven summits and the Eiger, Matterhorn and Grandes Jorasses' North Face. In 1976, Naar

National Geographic Announces Adventure Travel Initiative

Image from Google National Geographic is jumping into the adventure travel arena in a big way and has announced 11 great itineraries for 2011. These new travel opportunities will fall under their National Geographic Expeditions umbrella, but will have their own Nat Geo Adventures brand. Amongst the destinations for these inaugural trips are Nepal, Chile, Bhutan, Mongolia, and more. The trips are capped at just 16 travelers, which helps to keep it a more intimate affair, and accommodations will range from deluxe camping to

Res Baehler

Res is a typical allrounder and loves the creativity of mountaineering. Be it climbing at El Capitan, freeriding in Mongolia, ice-climbing in the Engadine, canyoning in Arco, first ascents in Madagascar or riding on a horse across the untouched Taiga of Altay Mountains, adventure is what he needs. Already at the age of 6 he told his parents on a hike in Tyrol that he wanted to become a mountain guide. When he was 13 he bought his first ski-touring binding to ascend the surrounding mountains all by himself

Expedition1000: Circling the Globe in 25 Increments of 1000 Miles

British adventurer Dave Cornwaithe has accomplished a number of cool things since he was struck by wanderlust while visiting Uganda back in 1999. For instance, he has skateboarded the length of Great Britain, paddled the Australia's Murray River from Source to Sea, and traveled 150 miles from Bath to London on a stand-up paddle board. But it is is next project, which is incredibly ambitious, that is likely to capture the attention of many. Dave is currently preparing to launch his Expedition1000 sometime

In Search of Shambala: The Search4Paradise Expedition

So many expeditions that we read about today are focused on visiting some remote place, usually in an effort to raise awareness (and usually funds!) for a cause. While those are certainly noble endeavors, and regular readers know that I don't shy away from writing about them, sometimes it's nice to see an expedition that is being undertaken for the exploration and sheer sense of adventure. The Search4Pardise expedition, led by Arita Baaijens , is a perfect example of just such a journey. Baaijens is ...

Ripley Davenport Announces Gobi 2011 Expedition

Image from Google British Adventurer Ripley Davenport has announced his plans for 2011 by launching a new website in support of his expedition to trek across the Gobi Desert. This new endeavor will spawn a documentary film about the trek and the team's interactions with the indigenous people of the Gobi, while also inspiring others to pursue adventures of their own. Unlike his attempt to cross Mongolia on foot, which took place earlier this year, Ripley won't be going solo this time out. While he will serve as expedition
