For today we were looking for a good grade 3 ridge leading to a summit. The weather forecast wasn't as good as yesterday but low winds and moderate avalanche forecasts gave us a few different options. After a recommendation from a friend we decided for the North East Ridge of Stob Ban. On leaving the Glen Nevis car park it was snowing heavily and this continued for most of the morning. The route began by crossing a snow slope into a NE facing gully. Whilst I was ascending I triggered a small slab avalanche

This one metre slab sheared easily in field tests. The old snow ice surface is shown by the red arrow. Very careful route finding to avoid run out zones, cornice zones, most corrie exits especially on NE to SE aspects. This snow profile was done very close to the profile yesterday when the slab was about 20cm thick, see yesterday blog photo for comparison.

He has named his 27 metre crimp-fest Eternit and proposed a grade of hard F9a.
The legendary 51 year old Italian climber stated that "Eternit is undoubtedly more demanding than all the others I've climbed in this style, from Bain de Sang to Thin Ice,...

Maurizio "Manolo" Zanolla has climbed what he describes as the hardest slab in the world. Coming from him, who's not called "The Magician" for no good reason, saying that he's now explored a new dimension when it comes to vertical slab climbing, well... The holds must simply be damn small! Manolo, who's now 51, has previously done routes like Bain de sang , 9a, Bimbaluna , 9a+, Thin ice, 8c , and he says this one is undoubtedly more demanding. So, the route. Eternit , 9a, is an extension to a route he did
