Safety, Systems, and Thoughts on Thinking

Image from Google When it comes to safety and systems, shouldn’t we think as objectively as possible? I think so, and I try. I suppose there’s “that one time when…” fear that can affect our thinking, or a “that looks sketchy!” impulse that can override rational thought. But exceptions and extreme examples shouldn’t cloud our thinking with climbing [...]

Elephant Ivory Project Update: Samples In Hand, Team Heads For Home

Image from Google It has been a couple of weeks since we had any kind of update on the Elephant Ivory Project , the expedition that is being conducted by Trip Jennings and Andy Maser, who are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in an effort to put a halt to the illegal ivory trade. Trip and Andy went to the Congo to venture deep into the bush, where they hoped to collect plenty of samples of elephant dung that they could use to build a "DNA map" of the region. That map could hold the key to shutting down poachers, as

The Story Behind the World’s Biggest Skiing Cliff Jump

TO BE HONEST, Id forgotten about Fred Syversen, the Norwegian free skier, but then someone sent me a link to Freds inadvertent 352-foot world record cliff jump and I thought it might be good to dust off his story. Fred was just skiing along, as we all have at one time or another, when he [...]

Park It Here

Image from Google Next Thursday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day and many National Parks are waiving their entrance fees. Here are a few California classics worth calling in sick for. Desert Dreams November is one of the best times of year to visit the lower 48s largest national park, Death Valley. Its a place to revel in calming solitude, ancient beauty, warm daytime temperatures (November averages in the mid-70s), and very few people. Get acquainted with the parks charms by driving the 2.5-mile Twenty Mule Team Canyon Road, which

A Pleasant Surprise

As the fall semester picks up, time will be short and climbing trips strategic in nature. The seemingly ample leisure of an afternoon teetering across the talus of Chaos Canyon may have to give way to more focused endeavors. I have been trying to lay foundations for success by getting better acquainted with several potentially doable projects, the most recent of which is Element of Surprise. I went back up to Lower Chaos on Friday with Jenn Fields, the outdoor recreation columnist for the Colorado Daily
