About a month ago, before I went on unplanned hiatus from writing this blog, I read a very interesting commentary at Kairn.com on the Olympics and climbing. There has been a consistent push in recent years for the inclusion of competition climbing in the Olympics, perhaps in part because the potential resulting higher profile could bring bigger sponsors on board for events such as the World Cup. Here are some thoughts translated from the French, originally authored by Jean Pierre Banville: " Elleva y ...

Posted By Liv Sansoz the 2011-08-02 A little trick for any climber who might experience a broken foot one day... and only if you feel no pain when pushing down on your leg : Go to your favorite Shoemaker and ask him, as seriously as possible, to stick some Vibram rubber on your cast! That is exactly what I did after a few frustrating climbing attempts, sliding unpleasantly with the cast. I went to see Christophe, the very professional and nice shoemaker in Chamonix. I thought he would think I was crazy but

At this time of the year, families across the country (and world) are taking vacations. They head to the beach, the mountains, to the lakes the deserts. In the United States in particular, many east coasters head west to see our National Parks, our majestic mountain ranges, and our still-wild frontier. The effects of moderate to high altitude on children should be considered when planning your family trip to the mountain ranges of the west. At the summit of Mt. Sneffles (Telluride ski trails in the ...

What is "appropriate" risk? I've been thinking about this question a lot lately as I read other blog posts about risk taking for the adventurous adult (example, Amy Christensen's Expand Outdoors ). Adults in general, and parents specifically, are constantly evaluating risk as it relates to themselves and their children. Getting in a car, going to an amusement park, and even buying groceries (organic), require parents to determine risk and reward before making a choice. When we start to plan a family ...

Back in 2008, adventurer Todd Carmichael made a solo, unsupported journey to the South Pole, setting a speed record in the process. At the time, we has a glimpse of the hardships that he suffered on his journey, which lasted for more than 39 days, but we really never had a chance to learn his full story. That is until now. A new film entitled Race to the Bottom of the World is making the rounds, and it appears to offer a very personal look at the struggles that Todd had to over come to reach his goal. You
