How Coire an Sneachda looked today

Aladdins Couloir is incomplete, the trident gully area looked a little more hopeful A very bare Mess of Potage, Jacobs Ladder is incomplete. Some ice holding out on the flat ice area with usable snowfields between point five and Fiachaill Buttress


Happy new Year

Fiacaill Coire Sneachda is wind scoured but windslab is building again on the lee side Lochain Mess of Potage in Coire an t-Sneachda looking more wintry


Dry light winds freezing level around the tops

Mess of Potage looking rather black, but large snow fields remain on the slopes. The snowpack is isothermal. Today's pit was dug on Aladdins buttress crag apron


Soft weak layer

As the winds increased on Monday a firm slabby layer developed overlying the soft layer beneath leading to a snow pack weaknesses. In this photo you can see the mixture of blue snow ice and windslab deposits. (Mess of Potage and Jacobs Ladder) A tap test revealing the weaker soft layer.


Very cold with bright spells

Some avalanche debris was noted just below Jacobs ladder on the right of this photo and below mess of potage below the crag apron. The snowpack very cold and weak on many aspects. Tap test revealed a weak faceted layer just above the old hard snow ice layer on a NW aspect at 1050m.


Visibility in the Cairngorms!

Drifting snow this morning on WSW winds. Today's pit was on a NE aspect. Yestereday debris from the rising temperature seen to the left of Mess of Potage.

Thick Cloud- Deep Snow

Looking onto Mess of Potage in Coire an t Sneachda. A day of very poor visibility and deep snow - difficult trail breaking - it took a party 3hrs to get to the base of the crag in Coire an T Sneachda from the car park ! The snowpack feels very spooky especially with the weak layers 40 cm down on the old surface hoar layer on what seems like all aspects.


Large quantities of spindrift

Fiacaill Buttress seen inbetween strong gusts which carried large amounts of spindrift from the plateau. Many people were climbing on Mess of Potage today. The short video clip shows large amounts of spindrift loading the top of the Goat Track in Sneachda.  It looked like The Niagra Falls
