Explorers Club Infighting Hits New York Post

Image from Google One of the stories I've been following over the past few weeks has been reports of serious infighting going on at the Explorers Club , an organization that has been around for more than a hundred years and has counted such notable explorers as Neil Armstrong and Sir Edmund Hillary amongst its ranks. Today, a story appeared in the New York Post that gives us a further glimpse at what is going on behind closed doors at the venerable institution. You can read the Post article by clicking here , but in a ...

Video: Rocking and Rolling On The Southern Ocean

Image from Google The Drake Passage is one of the most notoriously treacherous bodies of water in the world. Sitting between the southern tip of South America and the Shetland Islands of Antarctica, it is a dividing line of sorts between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Because of its unique geographical location, it has been known to see some incredibly bad weather, which can make sailing through those waters a precarious affair. Recently, ski guide Kent McBride experienced this first hand when he was returning from an ...

Are Things Amiss At The Explorers Club?

Image from Google I received an interesting tip today of big things brewing at The Explorers Club , the venerable institution that has played a vital role in promoting the exploration of our planet. It seems that over the past day or so, 10 of the 12 members of the organization's Flag and Honors Committee have resigned over disagreements within the Club. I'm told that members of that committee sent a letter to The Explorers Club Board of Directors expressing concerns about the direction the Officers and Directors were ...

Like the Raid the North Extreme which will be held in British Columbia's West Kootney region at the end of July. Last week, organizers for the race announced a partnership with Canadian gear retailer Atmosphere , naming them their title sponsor for the event. The company will promote the race in their stores of course, as well as provide gear and contest prizes for racers and ...

Checkpoint Tracker Rankings (June 15 - 2011)

The 2011 Checkpoint Tracker adventure racing series continues to move ahead, with more events scheduled across the U.S. throughout the summer. Teams that participate in those events earn points on the Checkpoint Tracker leaderboard, with the best adventure racers earning an invite to compete in the North American Championship , which will take place in Kentucky this October. More on MRTs

I’m back home from a couple of good days with the Mountain Equipment team in Manchester. I was speaking in lecture at the ME store talking about trying to arrive at a confident state for heading back up to Orkney again for sessions on my project. To help with that I finally got a nice day to head out with Anna and do some tradding. This is the difficulty in Scotland sometimes - Although I feel quite fit now from Steall and board sessions, there’s no substitute for going out and leading a lot of long

Climbing, The Internet and Social Networking

About a year ago I proposed that 8a.nu needs to rethink itself , an argument that I still stand behind. The world of human interaction on the internet has changed radically in the past two or three years, a process aided primarily by the arrival of a new generation of smartphones and the now ubiquitous Facebook. The degree of connectivity available to people is unnerving at times, especially given the GPS function in iPhones, etc. It is possible via Foursquare, Twitter, and Facebook( though you may regret

Norwegian Rockmaster

Image from Google We arrived well in Oslo! But there was still a long way to go. We had to wait 1,5h to get a rented car. At the airport we met Daila Ojeda and we drove 6 hours till we reached the meeting point which was only 290km away. Finally we arrived at 2 am and met the rest of the German team, Jule Wurm, Jan Hojer, Christian Popien and Jeremias Groß and got a very nice fishsoop. Our accommodation in luxurious holiday-houses was a big contrast to our life in Céüse. It wasn’t easy to get up so early to compete.
