Paul Robinson is back in South Africa. Actually he has been for some time, and when he did the FA of Mirta, 8B+, I figured it was about time I posted something about it. Most boulderers, if not all, who go to SA go to Rocklands. Paul had already been there a couple of times, so this time he decided to try something else, the bouldering around Cape Town itself.
I asked him if he could tell us a bit about the area, problems and what he's been up to.
Well the rock here is amazing. It has been...

Back in October I posted about an event called FEAT (which stands for Fascinating Expedition Adventure Talks) that took place in Johannesburg, South Africa. FEAT was billed as TED Talks for the outdoor crowd, featuring 12 South African adventurers who were given exactly seven minutes each to share an aspect of their expeditions with the audience. The Jo'burg event was such a hit, that it spawned a second edition that took place in Cape Town on February 12, and by all accounts that show was a fantastic ...

So I've been home from South Africa for nearly a week, and I haven't had much of a chance to share my experiences from while I was there. You'll definitely be hearing a lot more about my time in SA in the days ahead, as I will be writing a number of stories about what I did there. Of course, I visited Kruger National Park, one of the greatest places in the world to spot wild animals, and while we did go on game drives, I wasn't there to go on safari per se. In fact, I was actually there to learn how safari

My good friend and fellow blogger Jamie Emerson has written a lengthy piece about the legitimacy of the V16 grade, a post that has garnered much response and debate. In essence, Jamie is pushing back against Paul Robinson's view that “We need to progress the sport of bouldering and not get stuck in this v15 rut and never move forward.” While Jamie's reputation as the grading sheriff of the Front Range might prejudice any informed reader towards his remarks, they have some merit but also some potential

With Tuesday this week being Australia Day I made the most of the day off and went climbing at the Bachelor Pad in Adelaide, SA with Justin.H and JT. This place is pretty unique and the problems are not easy to climb if you aren't used to it or mutant strong. It does hold a number of very good (hard) climbs, including Madball Sit start (V13) which was put up by Klem Loskot and a number of other hard classics that were put up by Sharik Walker. If you are interested in more details, you can get the guide at

In this post I am responding to a guest post at the Climbing Narc : "In short, holding two cultures up next to each other and saying this one is “behind” the other is this or that regard is to take things out of context. It’s certainly no big deal to do this, but I think it reveals maybe too glib an interpretation of micro trends in the reported (with emphasis on reported) ascents." Well at the danger of being perceived as "glib" I would argue that on every front and for quite a while American ...
