Sahara Challenge 2012: Solo Across The Sahara

Image from Google While we're on the topic of very long runs today, an epic new run just got underway last week. Finnish ultrarunner Jukka Vilijanen is attempting to run solo across the Sahara Desert, covering 2000km (1242 miles) in just 35 days. Jukka calls this run the Sahara Challenge 2012 . The run officially began last Friday, with Vilijanen knocking off 50km (31 miles) in his first day. Since then, he's been maintaining a steady pace in widely varying conditions, and allowing us to track his progress as he goes. Jukka

The course, which is 250km (155 miles) in length, will take them directly into the heart of the Sahara in Egypt, where daytime temperatures are expected to hit roughly50°C / 122°F. This is the seventh running of the event, which is part of the 4 Deserts series of ultra-runs. The format for this race is well ...

Thoughts on Expedition Impossible

Image from Google I didn't really have the opportunity to share my thoughts following last weeks premiere of the new ABC reality television show Expedition Impossible . Prior to its debut, I had been writing about the program with some regularity, and even posted videos from the start. Before seeing the show, I noted that it appeared to be a mix of adventure racing and the show The Amazing Race . That description holds up to a certain extent, although Expedition Impossible charts its own course as well, sometimes for the

Epic Tomato Promises Epic Adventures Around The Globe

A new adventure travel company launched this past week that promises to deliver unique travel opportunities to some of the most remote places on the planet, while also delivering cultural immersion and fantastic experiences to adventurous travelers. The site is called Epic Tomato , and comes to us from the folks behind Black Tomato , a company that has been offering amazing trips for some time. Atacama Extreme: Blisters Bring The Suffering

Image from Google We're now a week into the Atacama Extreme , which is an expedition that has been undertaken by explorer Ray Zahab who is attempting to run the length of Chile's Atacama Desert, the driest place on the planet. So far, the pace has been exactly what he expected, as he has covered roughly 70km (43 miles) per day, but that hasn't come without a price. Ray has been suffering with a massive blister, which has rubbed his foot raw, and as a result, yesterday he was forced to take some time off to let it heal. This

Chad - The Expedition Reports...

Hello to you all, I've been a little quiet recently, and for once I have a very good reason... For the last 3 weeks I have been in the middle of the Ennedi desert, amidst a sea of sand and sandstone towers, in north eastern Chad! The expedition was part of The North Face's annual expedition program, which every year sends teams of its athletes to some of the most random and remote places in he world, in search of something magic. This adventure in particular was the brainchild of Mark Synnott and had been

Ray Zahab and Kevin Vallely Announce "What's Next"!

While I was away last week, ultra-runners Ray Zahab and Kevin Vallely announce their plans for their next adventure as well. The two men have quite a history of traveling for long distances across remote and demanding environments, and their next expedition will be no exception in that department either. Last week, Ray announced on Facebook that the pair would be crossing the Atacama Desert in Chile on foot saying:"I have been promising for weeks to fill you in on whats next...what is the January i2P ...

Expedition Amazon 2010: i2P Heads To The Jungle

Image from Google Over the past few years I've covered several interesting expeditions that have been organized and conducted by the amazing team from impossible2Possible . For instance, last year they sent a group of five young men and women to Baffin Island, while earlier this year an entirely different team went to the Sahara, where they ran across the desert in Tunisia to raise funds and awareness to pay for several clean water projects in remote areas of the world. Each of these expeditions share a couple of common ...

Trekking Joradn to Petra

Image from Google While perusing the GreatOutdoors.com website earlier today I came across a great article about a trek I didn't even know was possible. Earlier this year writer Peter Potterfield took a 50-mile, week-long journey through the Dana Biosphere Reserve in Jordan , that culminated with a seldom traveled route to the stunning ancient site of Petra, an archeological wonder that dates back to the 6th century BC. The Dana Biosphere is worth the visit to Jordan itself. The UNESCO World Heritage site stretches along
