My recent trip to the Caribbean was filled with lots of fun activities, including hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sailing. It wasn't all just about fun in the sun however, as the trip was hosted by Microsoft, who assembled a group of travel writers to give us the scoop on some fantastic tools and laptops that could be of benefit for travelers of all types. Some of those tools included cloud storage service Skydrive , which is a great way to share video and photos from your trip, and Movie Maker and

Yesterday I reported that Explorers Web had the scoop on a late season attempt on Annapurna, in which a team of three Korean climbers were planning making a summit bid tomorrow. Today, it seems, the news from the mountain could be grim, as ExWeb now reports that the team's leader could be missing. The details are still a bit sketchy, but it seems that the team experienced bad weather on their ascent and elected to turn back. What happened after that remains a mystery at the moment, but local reports seem

Earlier today, ExWeb posted an excellent re-cap of the 2011 Spring Himalaya climbing season, breaking down all the stats and records, while putting it all into perspective for us. They have the scoop on the highs (pun intended!) and lows of another very busy spring in the mountains. Amongst the stats that may be of interest is the fact that there were, according to ExWeb's count, roughly 680 summits in the Himalaya this year. Of those, about 500 took place on Everest alone. Remember, this is in a year that

The queen of long distance paddling, Freya Hoffmeister , has announced her next challenge, which will be a considerable one to say the least. After spending 332 days paddling around Australia, covering more than 14,000 km (8700 miles) in the process, she'll next turn her attention to South America. Yep! Freya is now going to kayak around the entire continent of South America. This time out, Freya plans to make the paddle in three different stages, setting off on the first stage around September or October

The 2010 Antarctic Season is set to begin with a host of adventurers, explorers, and scientists preparing to head to the bottom of the world to take advantage of the spring season there. As usual, ExWeb has a list of the expeditions that will be taking place on the frozen continent, with some very interesting and daring prospects in the mix. Probably the most challenging of the planned South Pole excursions will be undertaken by Brit Chris Foot , who plans to make a solo-unassisted journey to the Pole on

The trauma of Saturday’s efforts has put my ankle injury back a bit, so it’s no climbing for me for another wee while to give the wound a chance to knit again. Unfortunately, I think it could get in the way of finishing my big trad projects of the summer. But never say die… Who cares? At least I got through Saturday. I didn’t really tell anyone, but the whole of last week passed in a preoccupied state of worry that I wouldn’t be able to climb on the day. On the Wednesday morning I got out of bed

Down-to-earth entertainment and fresh farm foods collide on the Santa Cruz coast. Spend the weekend nibbling and noshing, toss in a two-step, and leave with a smile wider than a country mile. Barn Burner If you think barns are for cows and chickens then you havent been to Pie Ranch for the barn dance. On the third Saturday of the month this blink-and-youll-miss-it spot on Highway 1 blows the roof off. The nonprofit farm teaches sustainable practices and gives attention to something commonly overlooked in

I’ve just done my first climbing session in 8 days after a week long trip to Sron Ulladale. The session was back home on my board! There’s nothing worse than moany blogs and I do try not to post too often about the many many failures I have trying to make Scottish new routes come into existence. But as Claire and I agreed the other day (day 4 of sitting in the car watching the horizontal rain), people often don’t know what goes into opening new hard trad routes in the mountains. I’ve been to the

Headed back to Dumbuck with Lindsey today who was nice enough to hold my ropes for the day. It was warm for Spring, not good for 8c climbing. I managed my links from last time again after struggling warm-up. This time I nailed a new link by going from the scoop to the top. Probably [...]
