I'm sitting naked in the front seat of my car, it's dark outside and I can hear the rain rasping at the roof of the vehicle. The car smells musky and the heater is blasting my exposed skin with warm canned air. I look over at the mound of muddy shoes littering the passenger side foot cavity of the car, assessing my quiver and the state of my legs, trying to figure out what sort of support I feel like. My suit pants and tie are in a crumpled heap on the passenger seat. It's the main reason I buy iron free

One of the best things about a bike ride is chasing it all down with a post-pedal brew. Here are a few great bike rides that lead to pints of gold. Tap into them! Bike Hops Road riding Sonomas backroads is a beautiful thing: green pastures, farmland, and plenty of ways work up a thirst. But sometimes a pilsner or pale ale sounds better than a pinot after your workout. Quench the desire with a 12-mile round-trip route (map and link below) that starts and ends at the Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma.

The Diamond, Longs Peak (photo from August '08) Yesterday was a beautiful day out, the finish to a week of awesome weather on the Front Range. After spending the morning doing some work inside I decided it was too nice outside to miss out on. I quickly stuffed some extra clothes in my pack, grabbed some water and drove up to the Longs Peak trail head in RMNP. The goal for the day was to get well above treeline and spend several hours at altitude in one of the most beautiful places on earth. I didn't bring

Autumns on and change is in the air--from the crisp, fresh scent to the gold and copper tints in the trees. Leap into the season with any of these East Bay excursions. Golden Oldie Briones Regional Park is a golden fall favorite: A rolling landscape, big oak, bay and maple trees, and little surprises like sheep and goats make this expansive park well worth an autumn visit. The mellow temperatures of October and November are a great time to hike this 4.3-mile shade-less loop with good views and bright hints

Last weekend I was lucky (and stubborn) enough to finish my 2nd 100-mile ultramarathon, the Leadville Trail 100 . The result was an awesome experience, after putting myself to the test and trying to go beyond my limits once again... The 100-mile trail run of "The Race Across The Sky" consists of a 50-mile out-and-back course through the mountains Southwest of Leadville and towards Winfield, in Colorado. Its altitude above sea level ranges from 2,800 to 3,800 meters, making it the highest 100-miler in the

For the second year in a row , my fourth of July was spent miles and miles from the nearest fireworks in an alpine wonderland. This year brought my first real trip to the North Cascades for climbing. The North Cascades is an alpine playground... more peaks than you can count, beautiful and wild views, and so many traditional routes it takes a series of guidebooks to plan a weekend. We got in late on Saturday, so spent the first afternoon trying to climb in a way-too-hot Mazama. After calling it a day, we

Every Gunkie has been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Dick Williams' updated version for his guide to the Near Trapps. Today I asked him for the latest news while we were doing trailwork..... It's coming soon! Maybe not as soon as you'd like, but look forward to a spectacular leaf peeping season from new vistas in the Nears this autumn. The book should be on the shelves in early August. Dick said that there is a bit of work being done on the cover in the next week and then, off to the printer it goes.
