Wet and Wild

Image from Google Today I was out with Stephen, Kate and Dexter who were super keen for a day out in some pretty foul weather. The aim of the day was to brush up on Stephen and Kate's navigation whilst Dexter ran around in circles and got under our feet (yes, Dexter is a dog). As the forecast was for high winds and gusts up too 100mph we stayed low and headed up behind Fort William. From the view point we headed south east up on to point 287m revisiting the basics of navigation and developing strategies that will work in

Local Team Wins 2011 Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge

Image from Google I mentioned the Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge last week when it got underway, but I completely forgot to update the final standings yesterday. The five-day event, which was a stage-based adventure race through the wilds of Tasmania, covered more than 350km (217 miles) and featured plenty of trekking, mountain biking, and paddling with some climbing, navigation, and other challenges sprinkled in for good measure. The fifth, and final stage, took place on Sunday, with the teams crossing the finish line in

The Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge Is Underway

Image from Google One of the last big adventure races on the calendar for 2011 got underway today in Australia, where the Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge is taking place. The 350km (217 mile) stage-based event will run for the next five days, culminating with a final leg to crown the champion on Sunday. As the name implies, the race will take place in the wilds of Tasmania, one of the more remote and untamed places on the planet. Each of the five stages will feature mountain biking, trekking, and paddling sections that will

Kalymnos 2011 - Trip Report 7 (Dolphin Bay & Kalydna)

You thought we'd wrapped? How wrong you are! Gird your loins dear readers and prepare yourself for another gripping six-part series of Upskillery on the isle of Kalymnos. Despite imminent Grecian economic collapse, general strikes, aircraft groundings and a run-in with pirates, our first team of Upskill players managed to leave the island and make their way home. This left a void that only a group of boisterous Aussies could fill, so we imported some. Allow me to introduce the new players. Upskill Kalymnos

Forrest Coots

Forrest grew up in the mountains and is the product of a life spent in the outdoors. Born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, he and his family moved to Mount Shasta when he was three. With a ski resort fifteen minutes from his home and parents that worked at the resort, it was natural that Forrest took to skiing at an early age. Forrest's early focus in skiing was geared towards ski racing. During high school, Forrest won two high school state championships and was the 1998 USSA J1 Jr. Olympic Champion in the ...

The Frumious Bandersnatch E7 6c, Fallen Block Zawn

Nick Bullock has climbed a wild and radically steep line left of Godzilla in Fallen Block Zawn at Rhoscolyn. The Frumious Bandersnatch E7 6c strikes an improbable line up through some eye-popping territory. The route took several visits, some alarming top-rope inspection, and at least one terrifying fall, before Nick topped it out on the sharp [...]

The Risks and Rewards of Extreme Adventure

Image from Google Over this past weekend I had the opportunity to go to Aspen, Colorado and enjoy a few days in the mountains while attending the Outside in Aspen event. For those who aren't aware, Outside in Aspen is an annual festival, sponsored by Outside Magazine , during which outdoor enthusiasts get together to take part in some of their favorite activities in a fantastic mountain setting. For example, there was rock climbing, hiking, mountaineering, cycling, paddling and more. There were also a couple of good ...

Atacama Overview - Chile's Other Adventure Destination

Image from Google This morning I posted the first of what is sure to be several articles on Chile's Atacama Desert, over at Gadling.com . In the article I call the Atacama Chile's other adventure destination, because most travelers head to the South American country to experience the wild and beautiful Patagonia region or use Punta Arenas as a launching point for their Antarctic adventures. Located in the far north region of Chile, the Atacama is an amazingly diverse and beautiful region in its own right. The area is ringed

Adventure Racing News

Image from Google I have a couple of quick adventure racing notes to share today, as 2011 continues to shape up to be one of the best years for the sport in recent memories. First, I've mentioned plenty of great races on the Adventure Blog over the past few months, but I haven't talked about the Gold Rush Mother Lode Adventure Race that is scheduled to take place in central California in September. The race is four days in length, which puts it on the shorter end of the expedition category, creating a perfect opportunity
