I've written about the Mongol Rally numerous times on this blog. It's the annual road rally that begins in London, and various other European cities, and covers 10,000+ miles, before ending in Ulaanbaatar, the capitol of Mongolia. Along the way, the teams cross vast deserts, snowcapped mountain ranges, and miles of lonely road. One of the teams involved in the 2011 edition of the race blogged their experience at ReturnOfTheYak.com , and is now in the process of making a documentary of their travels. You'll

As the young climbing season continues to unfold, there are a number of milestones that need to be achieved before anyone ever goes to the summit. Well, anyone other than Ueli Steck anyway. In addition to the normal acclimatization process, teams have to build their high camps and stock them with supplies, which is a process that can take weeks to complete. While they're busy doing that, teams of Sherpas will be working the route and fixing ropes to the summit, which eventually paves the way for the ...

Over the past couple of weeks I've been following a number of climbers and teams as they've made their way to Everest, mainly on the South Side. As is usual for this time of year, there will be a lot of traffic on that side of the mountain, and a good deal of coverage for everything that is happening there. But as you well know, that isn't the only mountain of interest in the Himalaya, and teams are now making their way to some of those equally, if not more, challenging mountains, that are a bit lesser ...

It has been a busy couple of days at Everest Base Camp where the teams have been arriving steadily since late last week. They spent the first few days making themselves at home, resting up, and taking acclimatization treks up near Kala Pattar, which is close to BC on the South Side of the mountain. While the teams made themselves comfortable in what will be their home for the next six weeks, the Sherpas have been very busy. The Ice Doctors built the route through the Khumbu Icefall last week, and now ...

Not a whole lot to report from the Himalaya today. Most of the climbers are either still in Kathmandu and waiting for a flight out, or are on the trail to their respective peaks. The trek to Base Camp, whether it is on Everest, Annapurna, or elsewhere, is a spectacular one, as the mountains are simply beautiful to behold. But the path is also well worn and well known for many. That hasn't stopped Alan Arnette from continuing to post updates on his trek to EBC however, and with the traditional rest day in

We stood leaning on our poles, gasping for breath in the cold morning air at the top of the steep hill directly behind the lodge, right at the start of the trek from Dingboche to Lobuche. "How high have we climbed now?" asked Lise, in between gasps for oxygen that just wasn't there. I checked my watch. "10 metres," I panted, "only 390 to go..." "Al..." she replied, "....don't do that." The mornings were becoming increasingly hard, as Lise's panic breathing (Cheyne-Stokes Respiration, apparently) was ...

Since I was out of touch for most of last week I missed an episode of the Rest of Everest and had two to catch up on. Both episodes continue the Everest Base Camp Trek that took place on the South Side of the mountain last year, and both induce plenty of nostalgia from my own trek this past spring. Episode 142: Snot Rocket: In this episode, the team finally begins to breathe easy, quite literally, as they drop below the treeline and head back towards Namche Bazaar. This episode contains the usual trademark

One of the things that is often forgotten about a trek to Everest Base Camp is that getting there is just the halfway point of the trip. You struggle with the altitude and the challenging trail that wanders up and down some pretty impressive slopes, and when you arrive in BC, it is with a certain sense of accomplishment and wonder. Mission accomplished. But then it dawns on you, you have to go back down too! That's the experience in the latest episode of The Rest of Everest , where the trekking group has

Blame Canada. This morning we began the last phase of the Everest trekthe downhill portion. The views of the high peaks were absolutely stunning as we were setting out in the morning during the best weather of the day. Indeed, these were the finest views weve had thus far on the trek because the weather [...]

Chuck hungry And so it began, Dr Shipman, privates Aldridge and Knight and The Hand set off from the low lands of Dingboche heading up in search off the much fabled monolith that is Chuck Hungry. Officer Knight set off at a blistering pace with everyone in close pursuit. Bonita aka The Hand starts to experience an ever so slightly freakish swelling of her left hand. While this does match her un-usually large feet she is left with a particularly small ‘Jeremy beadlesque’ right hand. After ten minutes of
