On October 20 (2011) Jon Otto, Liu Yong (Daliu), Su Rongqin (Asu), and Tim Boelter made the first successful ascent of Mt. Yangmolong (6060m) in western Sichuan province of China. The conditions were better than hoped for and the was route fun and sustained. This peak is part of the Shaluli Shan Range and is on the border with eastern Tibet. This entire region is known as Kham and is ethnically Tibetan. Most of Yangmolong's north side is covered in unstable hanging glacier seracs high up on its face. The

If you happen to be at the climbing gym and you see a 3 year old Spiderman hanging around, it's possiblethat you've come across my son. He's a bit hard to track down as we tend to take the kids to the gym on days and times when there are fewer climbers around. We especially avoid the young/single social group that tends to crowd the gym on a typical Tuesday or Thursday night. Still, it was Tuesday this week before we could get in our weekly climbing trip to the gym. Rather than miss the week completely, we

Max Eder has made the 2nd ascent of Klem Loskot's Intermezzo XV gelöst at Plombergstein, close so Salzburg, in Austria.
Klem's original ascent in 1997 was surrounded by quite a bit of controversy as it was made more or less on top-rope. All the bolts were pre-clipped but the anchor. Klem, who was mostly interested in the actual climbing, didn't think this was that important, but went back a year or so later and made a new FA, this time clipping all the bolts. At this time he added "XV...

The ride is feared more than the actual climb by many Himalaya mountaineers, and for good reason. There were no survivors in the Lukla bound plane crash three weeks ago. Intense monsoon rains continue to make things difficult. The road to Tibet is jammed due to landslides; loads of snow is falling on Everests north [...]

After I did Rhapsody at Dumbarton in 2006, I pretty quickly packed up and moved to the Highlands of Scotland. There were lots of reasons for doing this, climbing being just one. The ‘climbing reason’ was largely to find the most adventurous, arduous new routes I could lay my hands on, and try and do them. To Hell and Back, Echo Wall and more recently The Usual Suspects. All climbs where the actual climbing is only a small part of the deal. I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time walking into Scottish

Jamie Clarke and the Expedition Hanesbrands crew are back today with another edition of the Steps to the Summit . This time, the message is about being consistent in working towards your goals and staying focused on reaching that end point. Jaime says that while the actual climb of Everest is a major undertaking, before you can even get to that point, you have to take 150,000 other steps just to be in position to go up the mountain. Consistency in your approach prepares you for the climb itself, but you

I’m really looking forward to this film from 180 South . There’s far too many climbing-porn videos out there, and it’s nothing like what normal climbing is about. UK videos do tend to stay away from this genre (ie. E11, Echo Wall), but even then they’re far too much about the superhuman routes than they are about actually just going climbing. I don’t want just the climb, I want the frustrating route-finding of the walk-in, the tired early morning drive, the sleepless nights planning and the ...

There's a lot of information on the web and in print about how to get stronger for rock climbing, but very little on how to actually get better at climbing. Those two aren't the same thing. Being stronger will help, but really you need to climb a lot to get better at climbing. Anybody promising that doing any form of non-climbing training will make you a better (better means climbing harder) climber is flat-out missing the point. I really mean that: If you want to climb better then climb, and structure the

For the first time, Boulder, Colorado has hosted a climbing event, The Battle in the Bubble , that reflects its position as one of the country's premiere climbing destinations. Simply put, everything went perfectly from a spectator's point of view. Access was no hassle after entering the park at the Reservoir. Sponsor tents, a slackline setup, and a climbing wall tower were just a few of the things on hand to check out. Not charging admission was a great idea, and I hope this event can continue to stay ...

Young and outspoken climber Franco Cookson, who is perhaps best known for his internet ranting as opposed to his actual climbing, has made the first ascent of a bold arete at Danby Crag in the North York Moors (where else?!).
Franco has graded the route H7 6c as he is a firm believer in the onsight ethic...
