The good the bad and ugly

Last Friday saw a post Christmas shake-down at 'dry tooling central' aka White Goods. Even 3 moves into my warm up I knew which one I was of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Totally flat and fat! Mr T claimed to feel the same but he still quickly dispatched White Goods and then set about Left Over Goods the very stern roof testpiece at the lefthand side of the main crag. A big effort on multiple figure of fours into fig nines saw both Andy's axes left abandoned near the top of the crag and his forearms ...

American 9a's

Image from Google Daila Ojeda reports Chris Sharma made short work of the long version of Duele la realidad, 9a, at Oliana. The original, first done by Markus Bock, was a very short (by Oliana standards) 8c+, and this was later extended by Dani Andrada. Across the pond and most of the north American continent, at Rifle, Colorado, to be more precise, Matty Hong has made the first ascent of Bad girls club, an open project that was cleaned and equipped by Joey Kinder. According to Rock Ice what makes Bad...

Good from Bad

Image from Google In the past month or so the pain in my ankle has taken a real step up. Causing me to lose even more sleep than usual which aint good for my epilepsy. I thought it was time to get put on the waiting list for the fusion operation so I duly called the hospital the other day and it looks like I'll be in around Christmas time for the op. In a way it's good to have these time pressures as I've been able to clearly set two major goals to train for and hopefully achieve before the op. One is obviously the E8 ...

Houlding Frees Nine-Year Project on El Cap

After five serious attempts over the past decade, Leo Houlding has climbed a new free line on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park with partner Jason Pickles. The hard-earned success required six days on the wall, three of which were spent waiting out a vicious storm at circa 1500 feet. The Prophet (5.13d R, 1,800') climbs the right side of El Capitan, overlapping Bad to the Bone for five pitches before crossing over to The Secret Passage for 15m. The line shares the last four pitches with Eagles Way. The

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly!

I was thinking, Im 18 hours into an enduring 24 hour drive from Squamish BC to Boulder CO.  I dont even remember how many times Ive made this trek either from one end of Canada or the other to run in the mountains, climb rocks and explore, going on 12 years straight at [...]

The Good, the Bad and the Spending Review

DEFRA and Local Authorities were hit yesterday with the announcement of further cuts following the comprehensive spending review. The news is of concern to the BMC which fears public access to, and enjoyment of, the countryside will be less of a Government priority.

Cave Life!

Image from Google Scary... Every now and again you meet someone special... Someone that makes you take a step back to try to look at things from a new perspective. Usually, our lives make perfect sense to us, or at least we have an idea about the road we are travelling. We become happy in our routines, and content with our comforts; life ticks on by and we smile. Its easy to think that ours is the only way that makes sense... maybe because thinking the contrary would mean we have to accept that our life is ultimately ...

The Tehipite Sanction

Image from Google The Tehipite Sanction by Rob Pizem Tehipite dome lies in the northern portion of Kings Canyon National Park, about a mile away from the Sierra National Forest boundary. But that is not where this story begins. I had planned on a summer adventure in Alaska where my partners and I would have to trek through the bush, cross icy rivers, navigate unknown glaciers, and finally end up at an enormous unclimbed big wall. We would make base camp and establish an amazing new free route on the virgin stone. ...

Pembroke Access - Good, Bad but never Ugly

The Pembrokeshire National Park Authority have announced the access arrangements for the next few months. The good news is that, like last year, there will be no live firing during August. The bad news is that a large scale, pre-Afghanistan training exercise is due to take place throughout June.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes Doesn't Leave Home Without His Goldfish

I came across this video at The Adventure Life and thought that it was well worth sharing. The short film was animated by the British Foreign Office and the words were written, and are read, by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who has been called the "World's Greatest Living Explorer". In the video, Sir Ran is off on one of his many adventurers, and he gives us a bit of insight into what it is like to be on a polar expedition, something that he is intimately aware. As is common on such expeditions, disaster strikes,
