World Climbing - Rock Odyssey, by Simon Carter

2009 was our first foray to the unknown delights of Vietnam and its limestone towers in Ha Long Bay. (You can find our 2009 trip reports and video here ). We had a stack of fun and I was particularly impressed by one limestone tower which had just two routes ( The Face 7b+ and License to Climb 7b). It was the most impressive and striking towers I'd seen in a bay which has over 2,000 limestone towers. After we left, I kept in the back of my mind the dream of establishing an extension to License to Climb ...

Fancy climbing on a new Saturday night BBC TV show?

Image from Google I received an interesting email today from a lady at the BBC. Remember the TV show You Bet? Members of the public bet they can do a particularly whacky, impressive or just plain dangerous feat. 100 members of the audience bet on whether they think they can do it, as do four (later: three) celebs. [...] Fancy climbing on a new Saturday night BBC TV show? is a post from: Rock Climbing UK , an online UK climbing magazine, written BY UK climbers FOR UK climbers. Climbing Media 2011: A Response to Andrew Bisharat

Image from Google In response to a post I made earlier this week, Andrew Bisharat, editor at Rock and Ice had this to say: "This is exactly the reason why blogs are never going to replace actual content created by legitimate media sources. Your post is uninformed, poorly researched, completely made up off the top of your head, and makes sweeping generalizations that largely aren't true (and none of which are substantiated by any facts) just in order to make yourself sound as if you know what you're talking about. Peter, do

Fall for It

Image from Google Slow things down with an overnight escape to wine regions beyond Napa. Autumns up! Sutter Me Up Sutter Creek in the Sierra foothills isnt called the Jewel of the Mother Load for nothing. Its Main Street USA ambience lined with 19th century buildings and mom-and-pop shops give new life to old gold country. Among the latest is Sutter Creek Cheese Shoppe; the French owners know their curds and the Fromager dAffinois is trs magnifique! Belly up to the L-shaped bar at Scott Harveys new tasting room where the

Happie Needs a Mobile Home!

For a couple years now I have been wanting to head west for the winter months, and each time I chickened out. In 2009 I was just about ready to do it, and then I got offered the chance to live at the cabin instead. It came unexpectedly, and I jumped at the chance. But I just wasn't prepared to leave my clients for three months and THEN tell them I was going away for another six. But things went well, and now here I am again. Even moving into the cabin on May 1st this year, I knew I would have real ...

Alpine Frustration, Rock climbing, and a young man called Asher

Jurgen on top of the Aig Marbree Its been a strange couple of weeks out here in the Alps, the weather has been less than prefect and so its been lots of travel here and there. But its been good fun and we've got loads of climbing done. First up there was Jurgen and Seb who had their sights set on the Matterhorn. A big snow dump early in the week put pay to any Matterhorn ideas, so we spent a few days up high climbing the Cosmiques and Traverse of the Entreve before a couple of great days rock climbing. The

Right to the Source

Image from Google Its an essential part of your morning coffee, shower, and toothbrushing ritual: water. Get to know the source on any of these three reservoir outings. Phoenix Rising Mount Tam has an impressive outdoor resume: sweeping vistas, whispering redwoods groves, cascading waterfalls and plentiful wildlife. Lesser known yet equally impressive is its series of five lakes connected by a network of trails and managed by the Marin Municipal Water District . Phoenix Lake is the easiest oasis to access, and the most ...

Miha, today I miss you, by Stevie Haston.

Miha you died two years ago on Cho Oyu, but it is only today I finally understand that you are not here. You were so young, and full of promise and fun, uncorrupted and hopeful, your death has robbed me today of some of the blue sky, and I will try to paint it back in because I know you would want me too. People reading this will not know you or indeed sadly, may never have even met someone like you and your passing removes one less chance for bright sparks like you to fly. I remember a conversation with

Everest Potpourri

Image from Google It is getting interesting on Everest. Almost in Vegas fashion, teams are placing their bets on multiple weather forecasts but the stakes are higher than the table minimum. Most are content to stay at base camp and socialize, rest and wait for the clear window that appears year after year. Others are more aggressive with their bets looking to position themselves at the high camps and then take advantage of the next narrow opening. As we saw last week, this can work, but the most experienced teams are ...
