On Friday 17th of Feb I’m running some daytime climbing technique masterclasses at the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven as part of the Fort William Mountain Festival . The sessions will be 2 hours long and there will be 6 spaces on each session. I’ll give you a fairly intense couple of hours of climbing technique advice, coaching and inspiration! To take part you have to be a climber and be used to a climbing wall, but it doesn’t matter what level you are at. You’ll learn a lot whether you are climbing

A man of many passions, Andy has spent the last 12 years of his life finding a way to live all his dreams out at once. As a full time professional photographer and filmmaker, he also finds time to write and perform live acoustic music across Colorado, travel the world developing and climbing routes of all styles - (Big Wall, Sport, Trad, and Bouldering), satisfy his obsessive fly fishing habit, & pursuing other interests that he says, "fills the down time." Currently living in a cabin at the mouth of ...

I was born in Bariloche, a ski town in Northern Patagonia. When I turn six, I started skiing and with skiing began my love for the mountains. I spent my teens climbing and skiing around Refugio Frey where I met the people that inspired me to climb big mountains. Eventually after hearing so many stories about the Fitz Roy and the Cerro Torre I decided to go see for myself what the fuss was all about. I headed south, crossing the Estepa with 500 pesos in my pockets and hand-me down climbing gear. Once in El

Since Canada I have been in real adventure mode; exploring, questing, learning, suffering, progressing and resting, usually in the middle of the mountains, with no phone or internet. The reason - Joy Division, a 20 pitch route on the Qualido wall, Val Di Mello. The result – sore muscles, sorer skin, and a fast track course in Big wall bumbling. A Brief History of the route... Climbing on Qualido dates back to 1978, and as expected, a whole host of mixed (aid and free) routes appeared over the next

Last week, Russian mountaineer and BASE Jumper Valery Rozov climbed up Mont Blanc, perhaps the most famous peak in Europe, and jumped off the Italian side of the mountain. According to Red Bull , the sponsor for the event, he then proceeded to make an 800 meters (2625 ft) free fall in his wingsuit, before opening his chute and drifting gently to the ground. Watching the video of the jump below, it's clear that he didn't go to the summit, but he did climb a big wall on the mountain, where he finds a small

The Black Canyon near Gunnison, CO is still a largely untapped big wall resource. Known for its difficult approaches, suspect rock and poorly protected routes, it is a destination that attracts the experienced and bold. The Hallucinogen Wall (5.10 A3+) on the North Chasm View Wall of the canyon has stood as a big wall classic since its first ascent by Bryan Becker in 1980. Becker graded it A5 and spent seventeen days working on the route. Since that first ascent, the wall has seen a fair number of repeats,

My skin is dead after 3 days in Val Di Mello but all is not lost as for the first time in almost 1 week, I have solid, reliable internet access. Many emails need to be read and written, but as I am lazy and have a short attention span, I decided on a break in the shape of this mini review of my favourite shoe, the FiveTen Quantum So what shall I say, apart from the obvious point of being purple and downturned... Hmmm, maybe this picture can explain a little... my Quantum collection, 3 sizes, boulder, ...

While on a rest day on a trip recently I watched the Asgard Jamming DVD and liked it so much I’ve been meaning ever since to get some copies in from the Favresse bros for the webshop. I got round to it! I think even if you have no intention of ever climbing a big wall never mind walking 600km in a single trip just to get to Mount Asgard, you’ll find this film very entertaining. It’s certainly the best piece of big wall filming I’ve seen. It follows Nico and Oliver Favresse, together with Sean ...

Name: Matt Maddaloni Passion: Adventure rock climbing. Home Base: Squamish, Canada. In the climbing world, few people are more creative than this longtime Squamish local. Recently nicknamed “The Matt Scientist,” Maddaloni has invented his own unique piece of climbing hardware called the Anticam which enabled him to free an otherwise unprotect-able death flake. His climbing successes include a 25 day big wall first ascent in Baffin Island, a first ascent big wall in Pakistan that he soloed alone over

Rock climber Colin Haley made another spectacular and daring solo climb in Patagonia back in late November, becoming the first person to top out on Cerro Standhardt alone. The climb is amongst the toughest in the world, but Haley has made quite a name for himself climbing in Patagonia the past few years, and has also become very familiar with big rock faces of the region. Haley first came to prominence on the international climbing scene when he and Rolando Garibotti competed the Torre Traverse back in ...
