The British Invasion

Last weekend I had the chance to take out the UK's current rock stars, Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker, to a place in the desert which boasts a very high concentration of sandstone roof crack routes and boulder problems. The climbs vary from thin fingers to massive off-widths and can be up to 50 meters long! Needless to say, they were very excited to get the tour and I was excited to take them back to my old stomping grounds and to a left over project or two. Tom and Pete (aka the "Wideboyz") had just come

Handa - More dangling above drops for the BBC

The Great Stack of Handa. Photo: Triple Echo Productions Last month I was working on two great film shoots with the Triple Echo team for the BBC at either ends of the UK. First off it was up north to the Stack of Handa to play the part of Donald McDonald, a Lewis farmer from the 1870s. The reason we ended up here was down to two accounts in the SMC journal by WH Murray and Tom Patey. Handa is a small island off the far north west coast of Scotland near Scourie. It’s a fairly remote and barren place, ...

Thoughts on the World Cup (or what happened after)

Image from Google OK, I admit it. I have been putting off writing about climbing. Not because of the latest compliment/putdown by Andrew B. And it's not because I have been trying desperately to get in just one more decent session on European Human Being before the snow entombs it until next July, though that has been an issue. It could be apathy, could be laziness, it could be burnout. Whatever, as people used to say before whatever became, well, whatever. Then the World Cup rolled into town last week and I began thinking

Bouldering in Rumney, New Hampshire

I recently got back from climbing in New England for a week with the LT11 crew and we had a blast.  It was great to get outside and climb on real rock for a change, pulling on plastic can get old pretty fast.  I have always wanted to try the ...

Another Tumble

Image from Google Having been up the Glen scouting for routes with Suzy the other day I'm still mega keen on finding projects to work at here so when Dave called yesterday to see if I fancied a blast to Polldubh to have a go at some stuff I thought it was a good idea. We headed up in the afternoon, Dave onsighted Black Friday then we went to Road Buttress to have a look around. After finding a relatively dry route I proceeded to try it while on 3 'bomber' cams. I rested with my feet at around 10ft (maximum) when suddenly

EMS NY NY

Image from Google Thanks to all the radical peeps who came out to the Five Ten Slide Show in So Ho New York on Monday!  I had a blast being there and meeting all of you, and I hope you got a kick out of some of my adventures.  The EMS store New York is smaller than most [...]

Outside's Cycling Issue 2011

Image from Google Just in time for the warmer weather of spring, Outside Magazine has released the 2011 edition of their Cycling Issue , which takes a look at the hot new trends in bikes and gear for both on the road and on the trail. And if you're in the market for a new bike, they even off up some great suggestions on what to look for when you head to your favorite bike shop. Amongst the online articles for this year's Cycling Issue are separate articles on the best new Road , Mountain , and Commuter bikes for 2011. These

A blast from the past - A Gritstone Year

7 years ago today, I fell off soloing on the grit (on a day as hot as it is this Bank Holiday), which ended up in a couple of operations and a big lay off from climbing . At the time my housemate, Kim Leyland, was making a lot of pretty high quality videos under the alias of Beardown Productions , including A Gritstone Year, featuring some of the climbing that Jordan Buys, myself and a few others were doing at the time. A lot of good memories, despite the sharp end to that climbing season. Enjoy and stay

Adventure Racing News

Image from Google I have a couple of quick adventure racing notes to share today, as 2011 continues to shape up to be one of the best years for the sport in recent memories. First, I've mentioned plenty of great races on the Adventure Blog over the past few months, but I haven't talked about the Gold Rush Mother Lode Adventure Race that is scheduled to take place in central California in September. The race is four days in length, which puts it on the shorter end of the expedition category, creating a perfect opportunity
