Everyone is naming boulder fields these days so we have taken it upon ourselves to do the same. SUPER CHAOS! is where the new goods are located and you have to say it loud or type it in all caps with an explanation mark Its the only way people will know that you are talking [...]

Looking up at Longs Peak (center) from the Jim's Grove/Battle Mountain junction. Mt Meeker (left) and Mt Lady Washington (right) are also pictured. I've been planning on doing a fast ascent of Longs for quite a while and it finally came together last weekend. I ended up staying in Estes Park on Saturday night before getting up at 5am and heading to the trailhead with Dave. We hit the trail right at 6 and made fast progress up through the trees, quickly hitting the Jim's Grove/Battle Mountain junction. We

Five weeks. Give or take a day or two. If I were sticking strictly to my training schedule, this week would hold: 90 minutes of cross training (aka, rock climbing) 1 hour of cardio a 1.5 hour hike with 35 lbs of weight two rest days a three hour hike with 35 lbs of weight, and a nine hour hike with 35 lbs of weight. That's, unfortunately, not quite going to happen this week. I will get in the first four items (#4 is half taken care of today), but a nine hour hike is not going to happen, as much as I'd love

The Diamond, Longs Peak (photo from August '08) Yesterday was a beautiful day out, the finish to a week of awesome weather on the Front Range. After spending the morning doing some work inside I decided it was too nice outside to miss out on. I quickly stuffed some extra clothes in my pack, grabbed some water and drove up to the Longs Peak trail head in RMNP. The goal for the day was to get well above treeline and spend several hours at altitude in one of the most beautiful places on earth. I didn't bring

The weather in Boulder has definitely been warming up as we've had several days of near 90 degree temps over the past couple weeks. As the temps go up, my motivation for climbing typically goes down. On the other hand, I'm pretty psyched on hiking and trail running right now. My route (traced in black) So far this year I've only been out hiking a few times, but I got out for a nice long hike/run last Sunday. Parked at NCAR and headed up the trail at 12:03 with the intention of hitting Bear Peak and South

Just after we crossed Ruby–No Name Pass, the storm hit and we scurried down through a boulder field, looking for shelter from the graupel and wind. Eventually we found a hole that we could crawl into. As the storm eased, we emerged and saw a world gone white. We picked up our packs and continued down steep grassy slopes toward No Name Creek. I had worn boots for this trip but Dave had chosen approach shoes, and now he slipped and fell repeatedly as we plunged into a wet, icy forest. At the foot of the

On Saturday (7/18) I went up to the Longs Peak area to get in a good run/hike at altitude. I couldn't have asked for better weather or scenery. I left Boulder around 1:30p and hit the trail at the Longs Peak ranger station at 2:35p. The trail up to tree line passed quickly and it was warm enough that I soon had my shirt off. The one major downfall of this trail (at least up to the turn off for Chasm Lake) is the amount of horse poop. Maybe I'm missing something, but it's definitely not ok to leave your ...

The Power Plant Boulders at the New River Gorge are a freakish combination of Linville and the British Virgin Islands... If you were to take the good parts of little Rock City and Rocktown and put them on a beach and add unlimited projects on steroids you would be about halfway there... Well not really but what we saw there was very promising to say the least. The Power Plant Boulders are seen off in the distance on the left side of the river. Nate and i busted out of town on Friday to meet up with Jordan

I spotted this pair of male and female Ptarmigan creeping around the boulder field. They are never very far away from each other, also their plumage is changing very fast now from white to the motley brown and black. (The male is the one with the red strip across his eye). The photos above are of the trident gully's and the Fiacaill buttress in Coire an t-Sneachda.

Nate and I just returned from a trip to the Lilly Boulders of Tennessee and after a quick episode of Nitro Circus I’m ready to jump pink tricycles and write a blog… We left Boone on Friday and met up with Chuck and headed to the hotel outside of Knoxville to meet up with some friends “The Film Crew” (Jordan and Zoe). We tacked a few bags of bread to the walls, lamps, and curtains and trashed the place and got a good nights rest. . None of us had been to Lilly before and we were all really excited
