Hey y'all! Let's get into the pics. Day five of climbing was in the mighty Grande Grotta and surrounds. This massive cave is the most famous sector on the island. Kurt's been experimenting with the GoPro capturing footage while climbing. I've often thought of headcam shots as "vomit footage" because the camera is swinging around wildly, but he's captured a few cool short grabs which I will certainly try to get into the trip video. This is a newish route in the Grande Grotta called Happy Girlfriend. It ...

First things first, come meet our team. Team Upskill 2011 On this climbing camp we are blessed with a diverse group with a wide range of ages and experience. From Luke and Kurt, for whom Kalymnos is their first true taste of climbing outside the gym, to Dave Reeve who has been climbing since the 1950s when it was all about swami belts, hemp rope and hip belays! Day one was all about getting familiar with limestone climbing. Though the weather was hot, we knew where to head. The picturesque crag of Kasteli

The people who work here, their lives cross paths with members of the military and coast guard. AMS is hired to teach climbing courses or lead Denali expeditions to these people. Sometimes it's regular enlisted, most of the time they are a specialty, occasionally they are groups of wounded from combat. Denali and her surrounding mountains are "bad ass" and provide a uniquely real, un-contrived environment to learn these skills and apply them. Its always so rewarding to the guides working these things and

From here to There? After two weeks of frustrating delays due to bad weather I'm off at one tomorrow morning on a Greyhound bus to Vernon, BC, along with my glider. The basic idea is to ride the dog 350k west to Vernon and then try to fly and walk back home or to the eastern edge of the Rockies somewhere. I should be walking from the bus station toward the Vernon paragliding launch by about 8:00 in the morning. Beyond that I don't know much other than there's a lot of mountain terrain (all of the Columbia

I remember my very first outdoor climbing trip like it was only yesterday. My brother and I bought a rack between us and just went. David didn’t have much of a clue, and I had even less. Downright dangerous really. The venue for this first climb was Ravenswick Quarry, near Kirbymoorside in North Yorkshire. The [...] Ravenswick Quarry An OK Mid Week Venue is a post from: Rock Climbing UK , an online UK climbing magazine, written BY UK climbers FOR UK climbers. Every year their are a few rain soaked days on the Tour de France , and 2011 is no exception. Today was one of those days, with a steady rain, and sometimes a downpour, falling on the riders throughout the day. It didn't seem to detract from their spirits however, as the sprinters faced off one more time before taking a backseat as we head into the mountains tomorrow. Todays stage was 167.5km (104 miles) in length between Blaye-les-Mines and Lavaur. While it did provide some hills, there were no major ...

On June 2, 2011 brothers Martin and Florian Riegler made the first free ascent of Zauberberg on the north face of Ciastel de Chedul in Valle Lunga in the Dolomites. The South Tyrolean duo freed the 400m line; the crux pitch goes through a ten meter roof graded at 8a. The Zauberberg is named after the Thomas Mann's masterpiece novel Magic Mountain . The route was first established in 2009 by Stefan Comploi and Ivo Rabanser. These two Val Gardena mountain guides climbed the line at 7-, A2. Ivo Rabanser asked

Over the weekend I was sent a link to this video by Hank Leukart, the filmmaker behind this great shot film. The video, which is a little more than 54 minutes in length, follows Hank and his brother Brian as they make the trek to Everest Base Camp, located at 17,600 feet in Nepal. The two brothers decided to undertake the journey following the death of their father, and although they are use to long distance trekking and hiking, the trip turns out to be everything they had hoped for and more. After all the build up and anticipation and a promise to Ben Wolstenholme that I'd fly back from Chamonix to race it all ended pretty badly with a f irst ever DNF... Karl Taylor had already pulled out a couple of weeks ago so Ben had arranged for his brother to take his place. Then Ben had to pull out at the last minute due to flu and so a fter hastily arranging for Toby Messenger to come down from Glasgow at the last minute we sorted kit and set off. We were 2nd to start but it seemed we were leading ...

We stood leaning on our poles, gasping for breath in the cold morning air at the top of the steep hill directly behind the lodge, right at the start of the trek from Dingboche to Lobuche. "How high have we climbed now?" asked Lise, in between gasps for oxygen that just wasn't there. I checked my watch. "10 metres," I panted, "only 390 to go..." "Al..." she replied, "....don't do that." The mornings were becoming increasingly hard, as Lise's panic breathing (Cheyne-Stokes Respiration, apparently) was ...
