I'm sitting naked in the front seat of my car, it's dark outside and I can hear the rain rasping at the roof of the vehicle. The car smells musky and the heater is blasting my exposed skin with warm canned air. I look over at the mound of muddy shoes littering the passenger side foot cavity of the car, assessing my quiver and the state of my legs, trying to figure out what sort of support I feel like. My suit pants and tie are in a crumpled heap on the passenger seat. It's the main reason I buy iron free

***This race report was written under intense jet lag, after way too many hours of travel and intense post race fatigue & sleep deprivation!. "Remember to smile out there!" This message, posted to my Facebook wall by Peter Watson, was my mantra for almost 10.5 hours last Friday. It was good advice that dramatically changed my perception of a rather uncomfortable experience. I was running the Courmayer-Champex-Chamonix (CCC) race at the Ultra Trail de Mont Blanc (UTMB) race festival. Starting in Italy, this

Four of us are standing around, knee deep in the chilly northern Pacific Ocean, trying desperately to offset and numb the pain in our legs. We can barely feel the crushed rocks and shells under our feet. Salt is crusted on our faces and jerseys, we all look a dazed, squinting into the sun thats bathing the cove, as our bodies struggle to come back into balance. Were mumbling inanely, wrestling with our incoherent and tired thoughts, but happy to no longer be trapped in our internal monologue. We chatter

Steaming up hill I am a selfish man, but I believe in community. I am a lazy man but believe in accomplishment, so like alotta folk I swing both ways. So the other week I had blisters and thought it stupid to make them worse by running a 100km mountain race, so I decided to be good by being at a refreshment station on the 55km race, and thus accruing some ‘Brownee points’ with that fictitious God that still lives in the back of my mind. Anyway there was a slight motive, as if I run in the race I ...

Having a chat with Adam Ondra The day was hard, running on empty I went bouldering with a gang of lads and lasses on perfect rough granite, sat, sometimes lied in the sun, and enjoyed the company of young alive people. I interviewed the Prince of climbing Ondra for a Canadian Magazine called Gripped in the late afternoon, which was interesting for us both I think, and a pleasure rather than a trial. I said hello to lots of friends from around the world but most famously to Chris ‘Kinglines’ Sharma and

After a few days of feeling a bit flat on the boulders, I needed to make a change. I decided a new hair cut was in order. This proved to be the recipe I needed. My next day back on the boulders I finished off my mini project, Catalyst V14. After leaving Crumbly, happy to be finished with Catalyst, I realized if I headed back home I would get caught in Sydney rush hour traffic. I decided to grab bite to eat at a near by cafe and head back to Crumbly. After coke and vegemite cheese roll I was back to Crumbly

Years go by, and you do little. A whole life can go by in the blink of an eye, without a single glorious moment. Even when you do climb well, most times, it’s just filling in the dots, and dashes. The last new route I did, is different from the ordinary, it’s very fine, interstellar, galactic, cosmic even. Why so? Try this, It’s a 70 meter pitch, It overhangs 20 meters It is on wires and friends on loose rock It finishes with 15 meters of ice Yet you do two thirds in rock shoes It’s hardish For me

Looking towards the Orion face area. Looking up into Coire na Ciste. Some essential supplies that I delivered to the CIC hut today, 4 and a bit litres semi-skimmed milk, 8 cans of coke, and a bottle of cheap Irish whiskey. I was up on Ben nevis today. Mountain conditions were generally pretty good, with climbers spotted on Tower Ridge, Point Five Gully, Italian climb and No. 3 Gully Buttress. There are also quite a few short but nice looking icefalls below Carn Dearg Buttress (where we saw at least one ...

Last weekend I was lucky (and stubborn) enough to finish my 2nd 100-mile ultramarathon, the Leadville Trail 100 . The result was an awesome experience, after putting myself to the test and trying to go beyond my limits once again... The 100-mile trail run of "The Race Across The Sky" consists of a 50-mile out-and-back course through the mountains Southwest of Leadville and towards Winfield, in Colorado. Its altitude above sea level ranges from 2,800 to 3,800 meters, making it the highest 100-miler in the
