unclimbed cliff! Just spent three weeks in Malta and Gozo, what can I say, apart from being very happy and comfortable with reaffirming my Maltese roots. I’ll be honest from the start, I did the tinniest bit of climbing and the maximum amount of free diving. The Maltese side of the family are reassuringly still doing their thing, a bit of farming, some work, too much eating, and family stuff. It was easy to drop right back into this life, talking serious one second, nonsense the next, catching fish and

When I was shooting 'The Long Hope' on Hoy this year I had a running joke with climbing photographer Lukasz Warzecha that he had it easy and that shooting video was much harder than shooting stills. So, with that in mind here are my 10 reasons why:- (Warning: please don't take this too seriously!) 1 Sound Acquisition Stills don't need sound! Recording good quality sound in an extreme position is incredibly difficult. You have to compete with the environment (wind, water etc). It requires specialist ...

Winter is upon us. But we're from Queensland, Australia's home of hot weather. This leads to two things: Numb fingers Bad fashion We ain't used to this. Beanie stolen from small infant. Mrs Upskill adds a splash of colour to the crag, and puts up a first ascent to boot. Heat packs. Ammo for six shots on the project. "How do you plead?" "Your Honor, we plead ... insanity." Jurgen on top of the Aig Marbree Its been a strange couple of weeks out here in the Alps, the weather has been less than prefect and so its been lots of travel here and there. But its been good fun and we've got loads of climbing done. First up there was Jurgen and Seb who had their sights set on the Matterhorn. A big snow dump early in the week put pay to any Matterhorn ideas, so we spent a few days up high climbing the Cosmiques and Traverse of the Entreve before a couple of great days rock climbing. The

Hello, I set myself a few rules when I started this blog and I don’t know whether I’ll keep them. The first was to try and keep this blog free from the usual advertorial stuff, the second not to boast too much. Now then boasting is an integral part of my psyche and it is something I have no wish to deny. I like a pat on the back and it helps with the training some times, but and it’s a big but what is truly worth a good pat? Doing great routes is that worth a pat, a small pat? By great I mean ...

Well I got a frantic call off a friend today, her daughter had been kick by her horse and she was unable to move, as I was closer I raced to the stables. I had all sorts of visions of what might be awaiting me, so when I got there and found her hobbling towards me, obviously in shock I was relieved, as at least she had managed to stand up. I got her in the car and took her home where some sweet tea and TLC help her recover from the shock, and frozen peas for the bruise which I imagine will turn a rainbow
