In a previous post, I discussed my feelings about the transformation of climbing into a luxury sport, at least at a certain end of the socio-economic spectrum. I posted a Youtube Video of an ad made by Citibank that features Katie Brown and Alex Honnold. Here's the video: Given the dismal economic picture in the US right now and the fact that big American banks in particular have had a great deal to do with it, it was natural that the ad would spark a certain degree of controversy. Here you have another great v11 boulder problem in Sydney. Like most of the problems around Sydney this one doesn't top out. For me top outs are arbitrary. I mean I'm not concerned with a long top out that adds nothing to the difficulty of climb. I guess you have to weigh out the pros and cons for anything that seams dangerous. Fortunately this boulder just ends half way out a huge cave so there is really no were to go. I love to climb great moves and this one does not disappoint. Combat Wombat from ...

I'm starting to wind down my posts on my Everest Base Camp trip over at Gadling . Last week I finished up the stories on the actual trek itself, and the next few will cover some logistical stuff such as gear and preparation for the trip. Today's story takes a look at the pros and cons of going independently vs. hiring a guide . As I say in that story, if you've never made a trek like this one before, than you should hire a guide, period! But if you have any kind of experience backpacking, the answer isn't

If you spend any time on the web looking for climbing related sites and information, then you would have most certainly come across the 8a.nu site . As we ll as rock climbing news, reviews and other resources they also have the much discussed and occasionally controversial score card and ranking system . It works like this; you sign up and submit your climbs to keep tabs on your ascents and if you like, you can make it competitive by submitting a score card (the alternative is a non-competitive logbook ).

The Spring Season on Everest may be four months away yet, but it's never too early to start preparing. Alan Arnette , who always has the best coverage of the Big Hill on the web, has launched his coverage for 2010 today with his first blog post announcing a Double Traverse attempt for next year. According to Alan's initial entry, Australian climber Gavin Turner is planning to make an attempt on history by completing the first ever double traverse of Everest. Gavin spoke directly with Alan, answering a ...

Bonjour mon petit pampelmousse’s Its been a long time, I shouldn’t have left you, but times up, Im sorry I kept you. I spent the Christmas and New Year period away from home, first in Devon, and then in Chamonix and a wonderful time was had skiing in with good friends. In time gone by, I used to be petrified by the thought of taking a few weeks off of climbing, but nowadays I realise there is much, much more to life than just hanging off of rocks, and also that you can have too much of a good ...
