VIDEO: South Africa FA:s by Paul Robinson

Paul Robinson and Marijus Smigelskis have made a video for Black Diamond Equipment. It shows some of the first ascents Paul made while he, guided by Marijus, explored the bouldering areas near Cape Town in South Africa, this summer. Paul's next trip will go to Stockholm, Sweden, where he will try to make his contribution by solving some of the long standing projects around and in(!) the city. He will also take part in the "La Sportiva Legends Only" invitational bouldering competition, along...

April Fools Day On The Internet

Image from Google Well, it's April 1st, which is quite possibly my least favorite day on the Internet all year. Be warned, throughout the day today, you'll see plenty of fake stories that will try to fool you into believing their true. Some are done in good fun and are worth a chuckle at least. Over at Gadling we're running a series of fake travel stories all day long. Being a good team member, I contributed to the proceedings as well, offering up this story about a guy who wants to ride his mountain bike (a Huffy no less!)

Slovenian President Honors Climbers

Franc Knez and Silvo Karo were awarded the Order of Merit by Slovenia's President Dr. Danilo Tuerk last Wednesday, December 22, 2010. This high state decoration was confirmed on the pair for "their achievements in Slovenian mountain climbing and for their contributions to the reputation of Slovenian mountaineering and greater recognition of Slovenia in the world." Knez and Karo have represented Slovenia in the climbing world since before their nation's independence, with close to 7000 routes between the

Winter Bouldering, The Book and the Big Stone

Image from Google I finally had a session at Flag that would begin to count as winter bouldering. After some recent light snows, the weather has cooled down considerably and shaded north-facing formations are still holding the white stuff. On Sunday, I stayed out almost until dark in 40 degree temperatures trying a silly contrivance on Red Wall. A couple of things are needed. One might be some good sized handwarmers, another would be a light on a tripod, like the Gorilla Light, to make the most of the little time I have.

Ratho Lecture 27th November

Really looking forward to this one, a special lecture as part of the final of the Scottish dry tooling competition series. Should be fun to see some of the future stars of Scottish mixed strut their stuff at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena at Ratho and try and link that madness to some of the games I've been getting up to with tools. Starts 6.30 I think and admission is £5 for competitors and £10 for non-competitors. Here's a link for more info ...

Image from Google K urt Albert, climbing legend and pioneer, died on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 8:45 p.m. in Erlangen, Germany from serious injuries he sustained after falling 60 feet on the via ferrata Hohenglucksteig outside of Hersbruck, Germany on Sunday. He was 56. Albert was best known for coining the term "redpoint." The name comes from his practice of free climbing aid routes and then marking the start of the route with a red dot. He also completed hundreds of first ascents, with routes bearing his name on all

Outer Edge Magazine Article

Image from Google I'm extremely happy and excited to report that I have begun contributing to the wonderful Australian outdoor/adventure magazine Outer Edge . It is a top notch publication that focuses on all the things that regular readers of the Adventure Blog love, including climbing, adventure racing, kayaking, and much more. My first regular column appeared in the latest issue of the magazine, with me weighing in on my thoughts about the young adventurers who have been so prominent lately. Young men and women like ...
