I came across this video at Adventure Journal earlier today and thought that while it was incredibly scary it was also worth sharing. The crash that you see in the video took place during the Victorian Downhill State Series of races that are held in Australia, and while it looks brutal, we're told that the person involved in the accident was not injured. When you watch the footage however, you'll see that if that is true, they were extremely lucky. Steve Casamiro, who is the editor of Adventure Journal,

A small plane that was taking an arial tour of Mt. Everest earlier today, crashed amidst bad weather, killing all 19 people aboard. The flight, which is operated by Buddha Air, went down about 10 miles outside of Kathmandu while returning to theTribhuvan International Airport there. The $140 tour takes travelers to Mt. Everest by air and circles the mountain, offering spectacular views of the summit that most wouldn't have a chance to see in any other way. TheBeechcraft 1900D aircraft took off from ...

Today brings a much deserved respite from the road for the riders in this year's Tour de France . The 2011 race has been plagued with crashes, leaving many of the cyclists bruised and battered, while the Pyrenees sapped their strength over the weekend. While the past few days in the mountains were good sparring sessions between the GC contenders, we've now come out of the first big mountain stages with more questions than answers. The two weekend stages didn't bring any changes to the chase for the Yellow

It certainly was an interesting weekend in the Tour de France, where the race moved into the first medium mountain stages, giving the Peloton its first taste of the pain that lies ahead in the Alps and the Pyrenees. After two long days of racing, leading to a rest day today, we ended up with a new overall leader in the Tour, but we also had an inordinate number of crashes, some of which will no doubt have an impact on the final standings in Paris. Heading into the weekend, Norwegian cyclist Thor Hushovd

If you were looking for excitement and fireworks on the Tour de France , today was not the day to tune in. The 218km (135.44 mile) stage 7 was mostly flat and fast, which predictably made it a day for the sprinters to show off their talents, with a just as predictable winner. It was Mark Cavendish of HTC - Highroad who claimed his 17th career stage win today by out sprinting Alessandro Petacchi andAndré Greipel to the line. Cavendish's team mates shadowed him well all day long, and led him not only to the

Stage 5 of the 2011 Tour de France was an undulating affair, with the riders rolling over 165.5km (102.2 miles) of open road between Carhaix and Cap Fréhel in Brittany. While the stage was marked with a series of rolling hills, there were no serious climbs, leaving the sprinters to duel it out for points and the eventual stage win. That stage in went to Mark Cavendish of HTC-Highroad who blasted past a group of Green Jersey contenders to nab his first stage win of the year. For Cavendish, the win will ...

Last Saturday, a group of cyclists set out from Los Angeles, California on a 3000 mile bike ride/race across the United States in an effort to raise funds for Blue Planet , an organization dedicated to delivering safe drinking water to the world.Ultimately, they hope to complete the journey in just eight days, eventually ending their ride in Annapolis, Maryland. If successful, they'll have completed a race that is longer than the Tour de France and in just a fourth ofthe time. These efforts are taking ...

In the last weeks of winter, Grant Meekins and Raphael Slawinski put up a bolt-free ice and mixed line at Storm Creek in the Canadian Rockies. The Peach (WI5 M8, 110m) climbs an overhanging scoop of yellow limestone below an "imposing" dagger of ice hanging from the top of the wall. The duo established the climb ground-up in four short pitches. Slawinski first came across the climb in spring of 2008, and bailed from the third pitch on his first attempt. "We retreated from below a radically overhanging ...

WG Note--I wrote this a while back, feel it again now, so it's going up: The last week has been high-speed. Articles, coaching, home, life, kid, the backlog of travel-delayed work etc, there just wasn't a lot of time to get outside and huck a lung. The first few days of low activity were voluntary, I was just plain worn out after Helmcken and the Knucklebasher comp, and then life started conspiring against getting out for an aerobic burn. I tried once, but felt like my feet were lead... I'm old enough to

Both ExWeb and Alan Arnette are reporting that a helicopter crashed on Ama Dablam this weekend, killing the pilot and crew member on board at the time. The rescue vehicle was attempting to rescue two stranded Japanese climbers at the time. According to the reports, the aircraft was making a second trip to the mountain from Lukla when it suddenly, and dramatically, fell out of the sky. It is unclear at this time as to the cause of the crash, but ExWeb quotes local civil aviation authorities as saying they
