Book Review: 10: Celebrating Ten Years of the Tour d'Afrique Bicycle Race and Expedition

Image from Google It has been nearly six years since I started writing this blog, and back in those early days I was still finding my voice and deciding what it exactly was that I wanted to write about. I knew that I loved travel and adventure, in all of its many forms, and I wanted to share that passion with anyone who might happen to wander by my little slice of the web. There were oh so many expeditions and travel options to be discovered along the way and continually came across a host of amazing things that I didn't

Outside Has The Cure For The Post TdF Blues!

Image from Google With the 2011 Tour de France in the books, it is easy to let a post-race malaise set in as we wait patiently for 2012 to get here so we can cheer on our favorite riders once again. This is the time that we console ourselves with our own long rides while day dreaming about our own days in the Yellow Jersey. Fortunately, the post-Tour cycling coverage over at Outside Online can help ease the pain of not getting our daily fix of Paul Sherwen and Phil Liggett. First up, Outside says that we can fight our ...

Tour 2011: Warning! Epic Showdowns Ahead!

Earlier today, the Tour de France returned to the high mountains, as the riders moved into the Alps at last, heralding the arrival of the biggest, and most important, stages of the race. Over the course of the next two days, there will be some epic showdowns to say the least, as the GC contenders do their best to shake Thomas Voeckler out of the Yellow Jersey and position themselves to take the crown. But that is what lies ahead. Today's course featured 179km (111.2 miles) of racing between Gap and ...

Tour 2011: Rest Day Recap

Image from Google Today brings a much deserved respite from the road for the riders in this year's Tour de France . The 2011 race has been plagued with crashes, leaving many of the cyclists bruised and battered, while the Pyrenees sapped their strength over the weekend. While the past few days in the mountains were good sparring sessions between the GC contenders, we've now come out of the first big mountain stages with more questions than answers. The two weekend stages didn't bring any changes to the chase for the Yellow

Climbing, steroids, and being thin

Jamie Emerson recently had an interesting post on steroids and climbing and Andrew Bisharat (the editor of RI ) recently posted a related article called " Climbers Who Cheat " discussing the advantage in climbing given by being thin. I just couldn't bite my tongue and hold off on responding to this most recent article. Since the R&I site doesn't allow comments, here are my thoughts. First, I think Jamie's article on steroids is good mainly for asking questions about steroid use in climbing in a public ...

If successful, they'll have completed a race that is longer than the Tour de France and in just a fourth ofthe time. These efforts are taking ...

What's Next For Lance Armstrong?

Image from Google As widely reported last week, Tyler Hamilton was on the CBS news show 60 Minutes over the weekend, where he recounted tales of performance enhancing drug use by Lance Armstrong and other members of the U.S. Postal Team which dominated the Tour de France a decade ago. If you missed the report, and want to catch-up, a transcript and several videos are available by clicking here . During the interview, Hamilton talked about the use of EPO, testosterone, and even blood transfusions that he, and his teammates,

When the Fun Goes Out of Crashing Your Bike

South Africas Eight-Day, Cape Epic mountain bike stage race is one of the worlds classic grinds. Former world champion, Switzerlands Christoph Sauser (part of this years winning team) has said its ideal for cyclists who get stronger and sharper the more they suffer. Apparently that doesnt apply to American Mike Hogan, who at 46 is [...]
