Coire an Lochain Coire an t-Sneachda. The dusting of new snow soon melted as the freezing level rose to above the summits around midday. Thanks Mountain Equipment for our nice new jackets I ended the day home and dry. It was a good test day for them in the strong winds and rain (gusts of 108mph over the summits).

As mortal creatures, our time on this small planet is fleeting. The very presence of our being is but a spec of dust recklessly hurdling deeper and deeper into the universes infinite abyss of space. As we all together tear through the boundless black cloak of night, we often lose ...

***This race report was written under intense jet lag, after way too many hours of travel and intense post race fatigue & sleep deprivation!. "Remember to smile out there!" This message, posted to my Facebook wall by Peter Watson, was my mantra for almost 10.5 hours last Friday. It was good advice that dramatically changed my perception of a rather uncomfortable experience. I was running the Courmayer-Champex-Chamonix (CCC) race at the Ultra Trail de Mont Blanc (UTMB) race festival. Starting in Italy, this

Peak Lenin It’s now the beginning of September and after a highly eventful and emotional past 4 weeks, I have another long overdue blog to write, whilst I try my upmost to avoid getting burnt in this scorcher of a British summer. It does seem I have been slightly unlucky with the weather, missing the ‘real’ summer this April with a long revision period, however my luck changed during late July and early August as I ventured to Kyrgyzstan, a country famous for..?! What followed was the trip of a ...

Yesterday was a great day in the Tour de France . Today was even better. There are certain stages that always deliver on the promise of high drama and theatrics in Le Tour, and Alpe d'Huez is right up there with the best of them. With its 21 iconic switchbacks, and nearly 15km (9.3 miles) of climbing, often at grades in excess of 10%, the mountain has dashed many riders hopes of winning the race. This year was no exception, delivering unprecedented suffering to the Peloton. Today's stage was a short one,

As I mentioned in my earlier post, it was another busy weekend on the world's tallest mountain. By some accounts, there could have been upwards in the neighborhood of 200 summits, although we'll have to wait for the dust to settle before we know for sure. One summit, and more importantly, one descent, is worth nothing however, as Babu Sunuwar and Lakpa Tshering Sherpa flew a tandem paraglider off the top of the mountain, and had what must have been one amazing ride. Many mountaineers will tell you that ...

I just returned home from a climbing trip in Alaska with Pay Murphy from Toronto. We were (almost) pounded into dust while climbing the Nettle/Quirk route on the West Face of Mount Huntington. About half way up the ice couloir, a large snow mushroom fell from somewhere high above. It was a strange event as [...]

You can feel the heat cooking the hairs on the back of your neck, smell the dust and pine pitch and warm rubber from your tires, and sense the buzzing you get from your hands to your toes after dropping 5,000 vert on a cushy freeride bike in the wild beauty of British Columbia. This [...]

Setting off from Ballater it was a cold, clear and frosty morning. By the Col beside Meikle Pap it had clouded over but it was good to see the dusting of fresh snow above. The cloud hung around the upper half of the cliff. Sad to see the ice pitch at the start of Parallel A is no longer complete. Over on West gully the first pitch remains but on closer inspection it may prove fragile and partially detached. Walking back down the track to Glen Muick I met a local snowboarder with plans for The Black Spout.
