Setting off from Ballater it was a cold, clear and frosty morning. By the Col beside Meikle Pap it had clouded over but it was good to see the dusting of fresh snow above. The cloud hung around the upper half of the cliff. Sad to see the ice pitch at the start of Parallel A is no longer complete. Over on West gully the first pitch remains but on closer inspection it may prove fragile and partially detached. Walking back down the track to Glen Muick I met a local snowboarder with plans for The Black Spout.

Having (obsessively) watched the forecasts for the last few days I decided that today might be a good day to head out see what was frozen. My initial objectives for the day were 2 gully lines high on Glyder Fawr: High Pasture Oblique Gully. I had hoped that Introductory Gully up the right hand side of Idwal Slabs might be in condition, but it wasn't. However the closer I got to Idwal Stream the more climbeable it looked. Yesterday Colby took some die-hard eager-skiers up to Hatcher Pass for a ski up on Lane Glacier. They carved some turns on the snow hidden behind all the boulders. Kyle Tom are the most eager father and son ski team... they make a point of skiing every month of the year! The weather held up, with a dusting of fresh snow up high. ~Blogger Julia
