New Sailing Circumnavigation Record Set

Image from Google Last Friday, the Maxi Banque Populaire V sailing ship completed a circumnavigation of the globe and set a new speed record in the process . The ship, which featured a British captain and a mostly French crew, beat the previous speed record by nearly three days, and claimed the Jules Verne Trophy in the process. The crew of 14, which was led by Captain Brian Thompson, managed to circle the globe in just 45 days, 13 hours, 42 minutes, and 53 seconds. (The previous record, was 48 days, 7 hours, 44 minutes,

French Succesfully Traverse Cordillera Darwin

This fall a French military team spent a month navigating the Cordillera Darwin in Chilean Tierra del Fuego. Lionel Albrieux, Sebastien Bohin, Didier Jourdain, Sebastien Ratel and Francois Savary, from the Groupe Militaire de Haute Montagne (GMHM) and civilian Dimitri Munoz spent thirty days traversing the length of this remote range. Though not a technically difficult feat in a pure climbing sense, the Cordillera Darwin's remoteness and horrendous weather provided more than an adequate challenge to the

Antarctica 2011: Jordan Tops Out On Vinson, Completes Seven Summits!

Image from Google Just a quick update on 15-year old climber Jordan Romero , who finished his quest to climb the Seven Summits over the holiday weekend by successfully topping out on Mt. Vinson. Jordan, along with his father Paul and step-mom Karen, completed their climb on Christmas Eve, and were back in Base Camp in time for dinner. For Jordan, Vinson marked the conclusion of a quest that he started when he was just 10 years old. Inspired by a mural he saw at his school, the young man decided he wanted to climb the ...

Video: Human Slingshot

Image from Google Remember that video we had a few months back that combined a giant slingshot with a slip-n-slide? Well, someone has taken that same concept and removed the slip and slide from the equation. As you'll see in the video below, they've essentially taken a bungie chord, strapped a person to it, then pulled it tight, like a rubber band, using an ATV. The results speak for themselves. Looks like fun!

Adventure Time part 1

Image from Google Having managed to get a precious slot of free time I'd hoped to go to the Alps but somehow despite planning 4 months in advance I failed to convince anyone to commit to a climb with me! But never fear there are adventures aplenty within our own shores. So I'm halfway through a two-part 'UK choss -o dyssey'. For Part One I linked up with my fellow Climb editor Dave Pickford. First for a 1000ft plus traverse of Avon Gorge's main wall. The Equator is a 12 pitch historical classic which we managed in 7 ...

Sponsorship and "Extreme!" Sports

Image from Google "How do I get sponsored?" I get that question a lot. Usually there's a fresh-faced young person on the other end of the email, wanting to quit school and go climbing/kayaking/skateboarding/snowboarding/whatever for ever. And I fully support the idea of following your dreams, even if the dreams turn into nightmares. Sometimes it's a matter of crossing things off a life list until you find what you like. So even bad decisions can lead to good outcomes; it's like turning clay into a pot, sometimes you just

Looking to try out adventure racing? Live in Wisconsin?

Image from Google Adventure racing is one of those sports that you really have to try for yourself to totally understand what it's all about. But, unfortunately, it can also be a bit intimidating, since you need plenty of gear, and the various disciplines can be tough to balance in your training.Of course, the best way to give it AR a try for the first time is to jump into a beginner's race, but those can be few and far between, as race organizers seem to want to find new and unusual ways to punish their regular teams. For

A note from 14

Image from Google I talked to one of the climbing rangers at 14 yesterday. He said that the weather had been quite poor lately. We often use the term "ping pong ball" or "stuck inside of a ping pong ball" to refer to being in a white out. Mike Janes called in from 14K this afternoon. He said the weather was pretty nice there, but it was quite cold. The winds weren't too bad today like they have been in the 14K basin. Winds were pretty strong on the 16 ridge and nuking at high camp and higher. He thought that it would be a

Solo Sailing Update: Jessica Finishes Tomorrow!

Image from Google For a number of months we've been following Jessica Watson and Abby Sunderland as they both have attempted their daring solo circumnavigations of the globe in the hopes of becoming the youngest to achieve that goal. Both of these remarkable young ladies are just 16 years old, and both have had quite the adventure out on the open seas. But now, one is closing in on the finish line, while the other takes a break for some much needed repairs. The biggest news at the moment is that Jessica is now just hours

Pacific Row: Roz Kicks Off Stage 3

Image from Google It may be a bit of old news at this point, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway. While I was away taking a walk in the Himalaya, ocean rower Roz Savage began the third, and final, stage of her trans-Pacific Row. As of today, she is now ten days out from Tarawa, the end point for Stage 2, and over the next few months, she'll be rowing more than 3000 miles, to reach her final destination – Australia. You can follow along with Roz's adventure on her blog . She's been making daily updates so far, and
