The staff over at Outside Online has been spending a lot of time on the Internet lately. The site, which is the web companion to Outside Magazine , has been posting lists of their favorite blogs and websites in a variety of categories, including gear, bikes, the environment, and adventure. The lists will have some very familiar sites for regular readers of this blog, especially since I was lucky enough to be named to one of the list as well. The Top 10 Environmental Blogs features such sites as Treehugger

Although I had visited Canada briefly in the spring of 2010, when I returned this summer, my host Scott Milton quickly discovered I basically knew nothing of the place. Within hours of my arrival he was inundated with questions about his homeland; 'What on earth is a 'Looney'? 'What the hell does the giant 'N' sticker on all these cars mean?' 'Why am I suddenly everyone's 'Buddy'?' 'Does it ever stop raining?' He patiently informed me about the dollar coin, new drivers, Canadianisms and the annual ...

My favorite of the 3 pieces we produced for the May National Geographic cover story about Yosemite climbing. It seemed so serendipitous to be 'on assignment' in a place that we all cut out teeth as adventurers (and then ended up becoming the namesake of our collective!) As always, thanks for tuning in! ~reo

It’s rough coming back to reality after an international trip. Even rougher when that trip was amazing. Coming back from South Africa is no exception. Truly amazing. Our five week trip to The Rocklands was one of our best. Our time was filled with great people, beautiful landscapes, and delicious food. And the boulders. I cant even begin. All I can say is next time, five weeks is not enough. I climbed many classic V11 and V12’s. Some of my favorites were Golden Virginia, Witness the Sickness, The ...

Yesterday I mentioned that the Tour Divide mountain bike race had gotten underway. The epic event features more than 70 riders attempting to cycle the length of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route, which covers 2745 miles between Banff, Alberta, Canada and Antelope Wells, New Mexico. Over the past few years, the race has grown into quite an event, with the riders dealing with weather and challenging trails, while going completely self supported in the race. Last week, prior to the start of the race, the

This winter has been very productive for me as far as finishing up some awesome bouldering projects around the front range. First up was Valhalla (V7) on Flagstaff. This is a very fun, very steep problem with a couple sharp crimps and a last move that spit me off time and again on link. I was able to do the high start (Valkyrie, V5) in one session, but the last move is just hard enough to be the redpoint crux for me. After falling there about 8-10 seperate times over multiple sessions, I went back on a ...

When buying a car they say you always want to be flexible about the color. One is not supposed to get caught up in the aesthetics. I just couldn’t help it. I wanted BLUE! (Form over function) Also, I’m a Subaru guy; they have been my favorite for a long time. So why am I [...]

I decided last minute to attend the ABS Nationals and was very glad I did. I picked up a media pass on Friday and nabbed a ticket for my wife (thanks to AIM Media), and we were at the venue off east Pearl at 7:45, 4-year old in tow. The USA climbing staff were super helpful setting me up with a pass at the last minute and giving good photo access throughout the venue. I had followed the semi-finals earlier in the day on the web where there had been a certain amount of concern regarding a scoring system ...

Climbers congregated under Hyalite's Genesis One flow yesterday for the first day of clinics during the 15th Arc'teryx Bozeman Ice Fest. Long a favorite of Bozemanites, G1 has played host to many clinics, first leads, solos and beautiful climbing days. Thursday was no exception to that legacy, when Pete Tapley and Adam Knoff provided an excellent clinic for future hardmen and hardwomen looking to improve their technical skills. Participant Nick Frazee told Alpinist Correspondent Drew Ruderman, "Pete ...
