The Ascent Of Rum Doodle

Image from Google Whilst dining at the Rum Doodle restaurant in Kathmandu after the ascent of Baruntse Mera Peak , I decided to buy ‘The Ascent of Rum Doodle’ by W.E. Bowman. I had heard great reviews from the leaders and people who had previously read the book which is held in high regard among climbers. Reading the book is a delight, and the story pure genius. As I cannot do the book sufficient justice, below is an extract. If you understand the humour of this page and have never read the book, I strongly urge you to

Five Great Laptops For Travelers

Image from Google My recent trip to the Caribbean was filled with lots of fun activities, including hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sailing. It wasn't all just about fun in the sun however, as the trip was hosted by Microsoft, who assembled a group of travel writers to give us the scoop on some fantastic tools and laptops that could be of benefit for travelers of all types. Some of those tools included cloud storage service Skydrive , which is a great way to share video and photos from your trip, and Movie Maker and

Avioding Creepy Crawlies on Tioman Island

On a climbing trip that was partially planned on Facebook, Luis "Lucho" Rivera and Cedar Wright put up two new routes on the Dragon's Horns on Malaysia's Tioman Island: Tanoshi Buttress (5.10R/X, 270m) marks the first recorded ascent of the Horns' north tower, and Batu Naga (5.12R 300m) climbs "one of the proudest looking lines on the entire formation" up a prominent buttress on the south tower. Wright heard about the formation from Scotty Nelson, who did the first ascent of the south tower in 1999 and ...

Running stuff, ‘Three swift lads’, by Stevie Haston.

Just chatting about running sometimes seems to be running. Anyway ain't done much jogging, slow shuffling, or running but keep thinking about it, which isn’t the same either. I am a bit crook, have a gammy abductor which I have made worse by climbing at my favourite crag. I have in fact worked with my injury, doing building work, run up my hill, gone swimming and diving, caving too, and they all hurt. Cycling is ok which shows you the value of having a pushbike. Anyway was thinking about three of my ...

Chris Sharma Video Interview

Image from Google Just came across this video interview of Chris Sharma, the first in a series of five being put out by Sterling Rope. Its a fun glimpse into his daily routine of projecting hard routes, with of course a little plug for Sterling at the end. Enjoy! Chris Sharma Sterling and Climbing from sterling rope on [...]

More Gear From OR!

Image from Google As promised, I have more gear news and reports from Outdoor Retailer. With as much stuff that is shown at the expo, it is nearly impossible to see it all, even if you're there open-to-close, each day of the event. Instead, we have to content ourselves to relying on the Internet to satiate our gear lust and help us decide how to spend our money. First, I've written and published a preview of my own today at Gadling.com . It has five of the items that I saw at the OR that were particularly impressive to me.

Five Explorers For The Future

Image from Google It's no secret that I'm a fan of Jon Bowermaster's writing. He regularly posts interesting and thoughtful pieces on his own website , as well as TakePart.com . We both just happen to be contributors at Gadling as well, and today Jon has posted a great piece that looks at five up and coming explorers for the future . Jon starts the article out by defining just what exploration will mean in the 21st century. As he notes, there really aren't any new lands to explore and our quest for precious metals and other

Karakoram 2011: Broad Peak Summits, Tragedy On GII

Image from Google Over the weekend, several climbers on Broad Peak took advantage of a brief break in the weather to head up to the summit, while others used the time to further acclimatize. There was also sad news from Gasherbrum II, where a climber fell to her death on the descent. As I mentioned last week , the weather reports on BP haven't been good for some time, but there were predictions of a very brief window opening over the weekend. As a result, several climbers moved up to high camps with the intention of taking

Brits Pioneer Second Ascent in Cordillera Oriental

E arly last month, British climbers Dan Fitzgerald, James Wake and Matt Balmer climbed a new route on what they identify as Huarancayo Sur (circa 5,200m), a mountain in the Cordillera Oriental range of Peru. Their route, Boy Don't Cry (Scottish V,4), stretches 350 meters up a gully on the mountain's south flank. According to Balmer, this peak has only been climbed once before in 2006, making their route the second recorded line to the summit. After a night bivouacking below a cirque on Huarancayo Sur's ...

$22 Billion Treasure Found In Indian Temnple

Image from Google I caught this story from the Associated Press earlier and thought it was fascinating. The AP is reporting that a treasure trove, worth in excess of $22 billion, was discovered in temple in India, and that discovery has sparked a public debate on what to do with the riches. The whole story begins with a lawyer in India expressing concerns about the lax security at the popular Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, located in the southern region of the country. It was believed that there were valuables stored in a ...
