CMD Arete

Image from Google Today was my final day with Stephen and Andy so we opted for a journey day where they could put together some of the skills they gathered over the last few days. We headed up over the Carn Mor Dearg arete which exposed us to some wild conditions. After getting in to the snow line it was pretty steady going up to Carn Mor Dearg, on arrival we donned our crampons and descended onto the ridge which is great fun. The wind was blowing quite hard which so goggles and face masks were essential. There was a good

All I want for Christmas is.....Winter

The pictures above show that is was not a very Christmasy scene on Ben Nevis today. Heavy rain, strong winds (gusts of 114mph were recorded on nearby Aonach Mor) and a freezing level of nearly 3000 metres meant that the snow and ice was melting pretty quickly. Most of the ice which had been observed a week of so ago is now gone, with only the main gully lines complete. With more of the same forecast tomorrow it is turing out to be more like A Nightmare before (after) Christmas than a Christmas Carol this

Coire an Lochain Coire an t-Sneachda. The dusting of new snow soon melted as the freezing level rose to above the summits around midday. Thanks Mountain Equipment for our nice new jackets I ended the day home and dry. It was a good test day for them in the strong winds and rain (gusts of 108mph over the summits).

A claggy day on the Ben

It was claggy day on Ben Nevis today. At this level the surface of the old wet snowpack had a bit of a crust, and was very soft underneath. There had been a little snow on top of this overnight which was turning damp through the day as the freezing level rose. There were a couple of teams of climbing on Tower Scoop which looked in okay condition. Another team was seen heading further up into the mist. I am not sure where they got to or how much ice remain on the likes of Smiths route.

Having the ming.

Today I "had the ming" on Ben Nevis. It was a very wet day with heavy rain at lower levels and above about 900m soft, wet snow. It was not as cold as hoped for with the freezing level rising to about 1100 metres briefly around midday before dropping again during the afternoon. The lower part of Comb Buttress A pair below Trident buttress.

Colder with a dusting.

Looking West toward Carn nan Sac and Carn a Gheoidh It was colder today with the freezing level around 600m and a very light dusting of fresh snow. The existing snowpack is very hard and icy. I amagine some of the easier gullies on Lochnagar would be in great nick at the moment, but the steeper buttresses would be black.

Slow thaw

We have mild temperatures in the Cairngorms with the freezing level above the summits. Its not all doom and gloom though as it's still looking very wintry in the Cairngorms and the weather outlook is suggesting cooler temperatures for over the new year.

High Raise

Today with a foul afternoon forecast I decided to head out for a walk above Ullswater. We set off from Martindale we headed SSW up onto High Street, hitting the snow line at around 700m. We proceeded onto High Raise, our high point of the day (802m), over to Rampsgill Head and over to Angle Tarn. From here we went over to Boredale Hause and then down NW to Dale Head and back to Martindale. A good 18Km day. Winds were picking up as the day went on, consistently wet, not much in the way of snow falling and

Lochnagar

It was a cracking day with light winds and plenty of sun. in Lochnagar, rock routes look a bit blacker lower down with some very white exits! Gullies have plenty in them. There is still good cover of snow above 850 metres. After a drop in the freezing level the snow cover is very firm. Black Spout still full. West Gully still holding ice. Summit, looking towards the Cairngorms. Paul Noble

Ben Nevis

Some pictures from Ben Nevis today. With a freezing level of 1800 metres and moderate winds forecast, it's not going to look like this tomorrow I am afraid.
