A t the end of April Ueli Steck climbed Shishapangma in 10.5 hours . 18 days later, on May 5, Steck and Dan Bowie climbed Cho Oyu, in preparation for Mt. Everest. Of Cho Oyu, Steck writes, "Sure it is a less technically demanding route. Nevertheless, the summit is 8201 meters high. Each person has his or her own objective. Whether one starts from 7600 meters to reach the summit or whether someone needs 10 hours or 20 hours does not matter. Each of these people brings their own experiences back home with

7 years ago today, I fell off soloing on the grit (on a day as hot as it is this Bank Holiday), which ended up in a couple of operations and a big lay off from climbing . At the time my housemate, Kim Leyland, was making a lot of pretty high quality videos under the alias of Beardown Productions , including A Gritstone Year, featuring some of the climbing that Jordan Buys, myself and a few others were doing at the time. A lot of good memories, despite the sharp end to that climbing season. Enjoy and stay

I decided it would be cool to post a bunch of my favorite pictures I've taken over the past ~6 years. Nothing too spectacular, and all taken with my Canon Digital ELPH, but I'm definitely proud of some of them and they're all good shots. FYI, clicking on the images will bring up a larger image (necessary for the panoramas). The first image is from Rib Mountain State Park in Wisconsin. I spent a Fall day in 2003 bouldering there (before bouldering was banned , effective this year due to State Natural Area

Getting back to Boulder all I can think of is getting up to Evan's and RMNP. This could be my 6th season and even though I don't have much left I still cant wait to get up there. I just love being in the park, the hiking, scenery, and of course the climbing. Since I'm starting to feel impatient I decided to make a throwback video from summer'08. All the footage is crap but it brings back good memories. Colorado Summer '08 from Phillip Schaal on Vimeo .

PlanetFear has a cool article up on their website which offers a nicely detailed story on climbing Kilimanjaro along the Lemosho Route. The article includes some great photos of the climb as well, helping to show off the variety of climate zones that trekkers experience while on the mountain. Standing at 19,340 feet, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa, and one of the few places on the continent where you'll experience snow. One of the highlights of the trek is that you actually get to ...

A while back, Iker Pou made the 2nd ascent of Chris Sharma's Demencia senil , 9a+, at Margalef. I decided it was time to ask the man a few questions. Big thanks to Iker of course, but also to Cedric Larcher, from Kairn , who has translated the interview to and from Spanish. I know he's gone back to make a video, so hopefully we'll see it soon. Demencia senil shares the same start with Llamps y troms . What is the main difference between the two routes? In order to do Demencia senil you have to do all the

I feel like almost every time I start a blog, I have to apologise for how shit I have been at writing since my last post. I have been uncomfortable with this repetitiveness for a little while now and so whilst on my last road trip, possibly somewhere in the south of France, I decided that even if I couldn't get regular Internet access, I would still write a new post every day and then post the relevent sectins at my earliest opportunity. Internet turned out to be a rare luxury, or perhaps I was just too
