Image from Google THE CANARY IN THE COAL MINE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE is the polar bear, and National Geographic has a dire report on their status in the increasingly ice-free Arctic. Great photos from Florian Schulz, and kudos to Natty Geo for telling the story with cute and cuddly megafauna, which might drive the point home. Just one [...]

The Daily Bike, June 16, 2011

Image from Google Racing photos are almost by definition redundant, and what they say doesnt often add a lot to the conversation. This shot of American downhiller Aaron Gwin from last weeks World Cup race in Leogang, Austria, doesnt tell a story on its own, but its a great photo for letting your eye wander and imagination fill [...]

Atacama Desert: Round 2!

Image from Google Just a quick site note to let everyone know that I'm traveling again. Yes, I know, life is rough, but this is actually the trip that I tried to go on a few weeks back, but was thwarted by the weather. So far, that doesn't seem to be an issue this time out, and with any luck, tomorrow morning I'll be in the Atacama Desert in Chile. While I'm there, I'll be staying at the Tierra Atacama resort, which I'm told has WiFi Internet access. Hopefully that means I'll be able to post some updates during the evening,

Here's my account of climbing Barni's route Dwarf Shortage, I'v not climbed the bottom pitch of Central Sadness but I'v heard that its bolder than Barni's route. ...

Himalaya 2011: Climbers Cross Icefall, Climb To C2 On Everest

Image from Google As I mentioned earlier in the week, things are starting to heat up in the Himalaya, particularly on Everest's South Side. Most of the big teams arrived there last weekend, or early in the week, and having completed their Puja Ceremony , many have started up the mountain. For most climbers, the first real hurdle on the climb is the Khumbu Icefall, a dangerous part of the journey that happens to be located just outside of Base Camp. The Icefall is a result of the large glacier that is pushing itself down the

The Great Grade Debate

Image from Google In a great post (a.k.a. self proclaimed "rant") by Splitterchoss.com ,author BJ Sbarraidentifies the frustrating practice of identifying routes by their grade rather than their name. . . I love the points and completely agree! I wanted to combine the Splitterchoss.com argument with another that I had heard recently (I apologize to the author as I can't recall where the post was) with regard to caring more about the number of "stars" than the grade. To build upon both of these points, I ...
