Snow showers and very strong winds

Looking up into Sneachda: Large snowfields with a breakable crust Snow thin on the ground below buttresses but looking quite wintry in general Spindrift over the Fiacaill Sneachda ridge A blustery day with snow showers on Westerly winds, recorded gust of 100mph this afternoon

Wet and Wild

Image from Google Today I was out with Stephen, Kate and Dexter who were super keen for a day out in some pretty foul weather. The aim of the day was to brush up on Stephen and Kate's navigation whilst Dexter ran around in circles and got under our feet (yes, Dexter is a dog). As the forecast was for high winds and gusts up too 100mph we stayed low and headed up behind Fort William. From the view point we headed south east up on to point 287m revisiting the basics of navigation and developing strategies that will work in

All I want for Christmas is.....Winter

The pictures above show that is was not a very Christmasy scene on Ben Nevis today. Heavy rain, strong winds (gusts of 114mph were recorded on nearby Aonach Mor) and a freezing level of nearly 3000 metres meant that the snow and ice was melting pretty quickly. Most of the ice which had been observed a week of so ago is now gone, with only the main gully lines complete. With more of the same forecast tomorrow it is turing out to be more like A Nightmare before (after) Christmas than a Christmas Carol this

Coire an Lochain Coire an t-Sneachda. The dusting of new snow soon melted as the freezing level rose to above the summits around midday. Thanks Mountain Equipment for our nice new jackets I ended the day home and dry. It was a good test day for them in the strong winds and rain (gusts of 108mph over the summits).

Marin Roller Coaster

I'm sitting naked in the front seat of my car, it's dark outside and I can hear the rain rasping at the roof of the vehicle. The car smells musky and the heater is blasting my exposed skin with warm canned air. I look over at the mound of muddy shoes littering the passenger side foot cavity of the car, assessing my quiver and the state of my legs, trying to figure out what sort of support I feel like. My suit pants and tie are in a crumpled heap on the passenger seat. It's the main reason I buy iron free

Jamie B's last Munro

When I picked the last weekend in October to complete my round of the Munros, I should probably have forecast that the weather might be a little "autumnal". In fact it was absolutely vile, and even the supposedly easy cycle in to Culra bothy wasn't. Nevertheless, despite my insistence that they really didn't have to follow me up the hill if they didn't want to, a motley collection braved horizontal and incessant rain to toast my last summit - the mighty Carn Dearg. The hip-flasks on the summit were much

Major New Climbing Film

This year's major film project is about to commence. We are shortly heading to the island of Hoy with Dave Macleod and Andy Turner to film an ambitious ascent of the Long Hope Route on St John's Head. The Long Hope Route, Pic Dave MacLeod, Click to enlarge But first, a bit of history. The Long Hope Route was first climbed in 1970 by Ed Drummond and Oliver Hill. They spent 7 days on the wall, sleeping on ledges and in hammocks, and several of the 23 pitches involved some aiding. A first free ascent was made

GearLoopTopo better than SuperTopo?

If you are looking for Yosemite Topos, or climbing topos for Tuolumne, Squamish, USA Desert Towers, Red Rocks, The Wasatch, the guys at GearLoopTopos have you covered. I met GearLoopTopo co-founder and Salt Lake resident Alexandre Lemieux in Maple Canyon last year and climbed with him again in Spain. Great guy who's come up with a great concept for carrying the topo with you while you climb. In Yosemite, SuperTopo is the gold standard. Back in 2002 when I was in the Valley the SuperTopo book was a ...

North Pole 2011: Barneo Station Ready To Go

Image from Google While the 2011 North Pole season has been a bust for explorers heading to 90ºN from the Canadian side of the world, there will still be plenty of adventurous souls that will be visiting that fabled destination this year. Most will be making a "Last Degree" journey from the Russian side of the ice, and as ExWeb reports today, the airstrip at the Barneo Station is ready to start receiving visitors . Barneo is a temporary base that is built each season to facilitate travel to the Pole. It is constructed when

Heavy drifting on Westerly winds.

There were gusts of over 70 mph on the increasing Westerly winds. Impressive amounts of spindrift were billowing across the corries. This SARDA dog from the lake district was adapting well to conditions. A short clip of the spindrift sweeping across the buttress tops.
