Today I was out with a group of 6 who were after some preparation before the winter months kick in. The group have all walked and navigated in the summer environment but have very little experience in the snow. We firstly went over the basics of navigation and go over any grey areas before we got into more winter navigation techniques. We discussed the hazards and problems that can occur in the winter mountains and how it can affect us navigating and most importantly how we can deal with it. After revising

This winter, weve warned about the hazards of skiers and boarders falling into tree wells, those deep holes in the snow that form because branches block accumulation next to the trunk. Tree wells can be six to eight feet deep (as deep as the snowpack, really), and if you fall into one its difficult to [...]

It’s a good time for jaded runners from Britain, or wherever, to hop on a cheap plane and have a weekend in more clement weather. So it was a bit of a surprise to wake up at 6am on race day with

The snow profile site today shows the thickness of the new slab. The Staedtler 2H pencil indicates the stiffer firmer surface layer lying on a thick 4 Finger resistance layer (maybe you can see the 4F mark), below and just above the old snow ice crust is the very soft fist resistant layer. The snow started here in light winds,as the winds picked up the slab became more dense. Definitely got the red light warning out for tomorrow with forecast warming and further re-distribution of snow.
