Strong winds affecting a pair of climbers descending the Fiacaill a Choire Chais with care. Heavy drifting onto east aspects where the poorly bonded windslab is forming - more snow tonight and tomorrow.

The soaring crack pitch of Mucklehouse Wall, E5 6a Since completing the Longhope Direct, our trip on Orkney has been light of step but heavy of leg. The team are all feeling a tad fatigued from great efforts of rigging, filming and eating a lot of cake to replace all the calories that you seem to burn here. For me it’s been a lovely slow release and realisation that the route is done and I can wake up a little more to the sights and sounds of Hoy without the blinkering weight of focus on the project that

Whilst it might have seemed to many people that I had dropped off the face of the earth (and I would probably include some of my sponsors, friends and family in those people), I was simply taking a step away from what I knew, and wondering how differently things would appear from another viewpoint. Jacob Schroedel I knew that things would change, they had to - the trouble was I just didn’t know quite how. I wanted to better myself by training my weaknesses, but knew that since my strengths lay in trad,

The big show in town this weekend is the ABS National Bouldering competition, being held at a dedicated location, not at any of the gyms in town. John Stack and a crew have been working very hard to get the new walls up, a glimpse of which is available at Jamie Emerson's site. It sounds like it will be a good time though I will most likely not be there. You can check out the comp live online at the UBC site. I have already discussed the problem of getting the general public interested in climbing ...

I just realized that I've been skiing now for 40 years, a hell of a long time. I sorta even remember my first few sliding steps as a kid, it was fun, and even after 40 years I still just love going skiing. I've had some side trips into snowboarding (best sliding tool ever for crusty or weird conditions!), but overall it's always been about skiing of some kind for me. I started out in little leather boots with cable bindings, then mountain touring on three-pin bindings, then a few years of resort skiing on

It's getting difficult to know what gear to use. If you take skis, you have to carry them low down but if you walk, it's heavy going higher up. Maybe snowshoes are the answer...

Now that all the cards have been laid on the table, I never feel alone. The heaviness of it thumps down the hallway behind me. It enters every room before I do and spills over the conversation. I’m haunted by knowing how the story ends. This blog has in some way been about giving up. Climbing for me was a distraction from a life that had otherwise ended. It served as a focus which eventually gave me a piece of myself back, but it’s what happened next which was always my goal. Of all the aspects ...

New deep accumulations in Corrie an t Sneachda There are deep snow amounts at all altitudes which make for very difficult trail breaking. The snowpack is very weak on most aspects with heavy and hard windslab overlying sugary faceted layers. In the cold temperatures this weakness will remain for some time

Photo by Katie Trembley, view from the top of Solar Slab, Red Rock, NV Well... this isn't the post I thought I'd be writing today... I had a few little gear reviews, and a "Wow, wasn't it a great year" post planned, just like everybody else at this time of year. But, last night's long winded emails with my beloved pen pals turned into this morning's long winded emails with my beloved pen pals and at one point, I was typing away, and realized... Today's not just nearly the end of 2009. Today has a ...

Well last night the rain was biblical, so heavy and relentless, that I had to change after walking back the 100 metres from van on the high street to my house, before I went to the pub. I had wondered what it was like up the pass the answer was devastating. I drove up the pass to work this morning and there had been a pretty impressive landslide just by the cromlech boulders, that covered the whole road, and it was only passable by driving into a layby . Just above this was the evidence of an even more ...
