When it comes to sleeping in the backcountry a good tent and a comfortable sleeping bag go a long way to ensuring a good nights sleep. But any backpacker will tell you, to live the true life of luxury, you also need a good sleeping pad. Of course, plenty of gear manufacturers provide durable, comfortable pads for our camping adventures, but few give you the complete package – compact and light weight sleeping pads that you actually look forward to using. Jim Goodwin died on April 7. To the modern rock and ice climbing community, he was a legendary pioneer. But to the hundreds who joined him as children to hike the Adirondack trails, Jimmy Goodwin was so much more. Jim Goodwin saw himself principally as a guide, a status he treasured not for the money but for the shared joy. Good thing his career began before the AMGA policies manual: Jimmy tacked a notice on the bulletin board at the Interbrook Lodge when he was eleven years old. At fifty cents a day for

On Saturday, after visiting Flagstaff to do a bouldering tour (nobody wanted one) and talking with OSMP Ranger Rick Hatfield, I headed home to regroup and head off to RMNP. The Park was looking gorgeous with the high peaks, dusted with snow, glistening in the sun. The Bear Lake parking is still touch-and-go on these nice weekend days, sadly the only time I can make it. A pleasant hike up to Lower followed and I settled in for another session on the project. After a fun warmup on the many moderate problems

In late spring, a team from New Zealand summited Dogonomba (5962m), a day's travel from Chengdu and north of the impressive Minya Konka (7556m), in China's Daxue Shan mountain range. Over the course of four days, Tim Church and Yvonne Pflueger made--what they believed was--its first ascent. It wasn't until the climbers succeeded and returned to New Zealand that they discovered their ascent was not, in fact, Dogonomba's first summit. Research revealed that an American guide had soloed the peak in late 2008

Mark Allen and Graham Zimmerman of Washington State have established a significant new route on the southeast buttress of Mt. Bradley (9,104') in the Ruth Gorge of the Alaska Range. Noteworthy for its sustained difficulty, the route also marks an early start to the season: Allen and Zimmerman were likely the only climbers braving a series of early April storms on the high peaks. Vitalogy (Alaska Grade V: M6+ WI5 5.9 R A1, 4,600') ascends what Zimmerman calls "a striking line of ice" about 350 meters right
