Katharina Saurwein and Jorg Verhoeven both from Austria, have been out in Bishop since around December 12 and have already completed some impressive ascents. Of particular note was Katha's ascent of This Side of Paradise (v10), the mammoth highball prow at the Bardini Boulders, and Jorg's ascent of Ambrosia at the Peabodies. I met these guys out in Zillertal, Austria a few years back when Lisa Rands presented a video by Sender Films in which she climbs This Side of Paradise . It was the incredible beauty

Seven of Nine V14 I still can’t believe the Sky Pilot project went down last night! I was buzzing so much I was unable to go to bed until 5 am, and lay wide-eyed until Freida burst into life at 7. The crucial difference after all those sessions? Several small but crucial ones. First, I had genuinely detached myself from expectation of success. When it’s at your limit, time and time again this seems to be crucial for realising true focus of energy at the right moment, free of interference from the ...

It is a well known fact that the Buttermilks of Bishop, CA are known for their highballs. It only takes one visit, or one glance at a photograph, to realize how big the granite boulders are and how unique the geology is. However, had it not been for the events of the mid to late 1980's, and a climb called Transporter Room, the Buttermilks may be known for the country's shortest sport climbs instead. From the history update to the latest edition of the Bishop Bouldering guidebook, Wills Young describes the

Rocklands is one of the worlds premiere destinations for bouldering and my personal favorite. I love the style of climbing. Tall pure lines up orange and black streaked faces with flat landings and solid sandstone jugs awaiting your arrival at the top. It lends itself to amazing highball climbing. In addition to highballs there is [...]

Enzo Oddo has made the 4th ascent of kevin Jorgeson's Ambrosia on the Grandpa peabody at the Buttermilks near Bishop, California. Since Kevin's first ascent, both Alex Honnold and Isaac Caldiero have refined the method of climbing this ~14m monster of a highball. This has made the grade come down slightly from 8A+ to 8A, but what separates this from many other high boulder problems is that the climbing is difficult with big and committing moves all the way to the bitter end. According to...

Famed Finnish climber Nalle Hukkataival arrived in Bishop just a few days ago on the first trip of the year for him. After a month or two chilling at home and training in the gym, he's psyched to leave winter behind and hit the road again. On his first day he made a trip through the Buttermilks, doing some classics. A day later it was down to business with a quick (half hour or so) ascent of The Swarm (v13/14)! Nalle is here for a few weeks and says he's excited to get to grips with some of North America's

I made a trip over to the Pollen Grains/Lydija Boulders on Saturday. The road down to the Get Carter boulder was still incredibly deep with snow, which is a bit surprising considering how little snow is left on the slopes of the main area. We all began to get a bad feeling as driving downhill in the 4x4 became tough going! Anyway, it was good to finally get out to the area as I’d been waiting for the chance to check out a couple of lines there. Daniel Ferreira had written to me a while back about a ...

It's been forever since my last blog post. As much as I love being constantly on the road, sometimes I just need a little break from it all; hotel rooms, airports, rental cars, airline food, speaking a foreign language, people that come and go… Traveling can get tough sometimes, so I've been chilling in Finland for a while and getting psyched to hit the road again. © Nalle Hukkataival The climbing season here in Finland has been over for long after we got a record amount of snow already at the end of

At one point or another every serious boulder has been on a climb in which they suddenly found a little too much air under their feet. Perhaps they knew the moment would come when they left the ground, or perhaps it snuck up on them and took them by surprise. Those with cunning and skill [...]
